October Training Focus: Active & Controlled Eccentrics

Last month, we focused on RPE. This month we’re focusing on how you lower the weight, not just how you lift it. The eccentric is the lowering portion of an exercise. Muscles get a powerful growth signal when they’re working while stretched. Think about the bottom of a squat when your glutes are stretched, or lowering a dumbbell during a bicep curl as your biceps lengthen. When you control that stretched position the muscle stays under tension and has to work harder. Over time, that can help build more strength and muscle. This month, expect your trainer to remind you: don’t just drop the weight, control it.

How and when did you find your way to Body University?

I found my way to Body University through my friend Michelle Weinstein, who referred me—and I’m so grateful she did! At the time, I was living in Encinitas and driving an hour each way three times a week to work out. I loved B.U. so much that I eventually decided to move closer to the gym!

What do you enjoy most about working out at Body University?

I love the community and how comfortable and supported everyone makes you feel. Each class gives you the personal attention of personal training while allowing you to work out alongside an amazing community of women. I also value all the education I’ve gained about fitness, nutrition, and taking care of my body.

What fitness achievements are you most proud of since joining Body University?

I’m most proud of losing 45 pounds, gaining muscle, and seeing how much stronger I’ve become.

If you could do one exercise for the rest of your life what would it be?

Definitely the Booty Builder!

We like balance here at B.U. So what's your ultimate cheat meal or guilty pleasure treat?

I don’t really think of food as a “cheat” anymore. Body University has taught me how to make balanced choices and find healthier ways to enjoy the foods I love—without feeling like I’m cheating or missing out.

Francine's Finds

I’ve been listening to Science Vs lately. They take popular topics, dig into the actual research, and break it down in a way that’s easy to understand. This is great listen for your morning commute or neighborhood walks. You can find it on Spotify or YouTube. Let me know what you think!
