Meet & Greet

Thursday, October 3rd

The Jacob Edwards Library is pleased to host an exhibit by Megan Garlie. The show will be on display throughout the month, in the main hall.

From the artist:

"I am a self-taught artist who works primarily with oil and acrylic paints, though I recently began my journey in wildlife photography as well. Originally from Canada, I moved to Southbridge as a child and grew up here. I began painting during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 while stuck in my apartment during grad school, and in the last four years have spent a lot of time working on learning with each piece of art I create. I am often drawn towards nature and landscapes when painting, as you will see in the collection of works on display. I have shown pieces in the 2023 and 2024 Jacob Edwards Library Women’s Month art shows and in the 2024 Harvard Staff art show. This is my first solo exhibition."

In October, the group will discuss The Cemetery of Untold Stories by Julia Alvarez.

From the publisher:

"When celebrated writer Alma Cruz inherits a small plot of land in the Dominican Republic, she turns it into a place to bury her untold stories--literally. She creates a graveyard for manuscript drafts and revisions and the characters whose lives she tried and failed to bring to life and who still haunt her. Alma wants her characters to rest in peace, but they have other ideas, and the cemetery becomes a mysterious sanctuary for their true narratives."

Staff Pick

Horror Movie

by Paul Tremblay

"In June 1993, a group of young guerilla filmmakers spent four weeks making Horror Movie, a notorious, disturbing, art-house horror flick.

The weird part? Only three of the film’s scenes were ever released to the public, but Horror Movie has nevertheless grown a rabid fanbase. Three decades later, Hollywood is pushing for a big budget reboot.

The man who played 'The Thin Kid' is the only surviving cast member. He remembers all too well the secrets buried within the original screenplay, the bizarre events of the filming, and the dangerous crossed lines on set that resulted in tragedy. As memories flood back in, the boundaries between reality and film, past and present start to blur. But he’s going to help remake the film, even if it means navigating a world of cynical producers, egomaniacal directors, and surreal fan conventions—demons of the past be damned.

But at what cost?

Horror Movie is an obsessive, psychologically chilling, and suspenseful feat of storytelling genius that builds inexorably to an unforgettable, mind-bending conclusion."
