Meet Guest Blogger Stacey Town

"Cancer sucks, death sucks; but if we believe in ourselves, let our family and friends help us and realize life is what you make it; things might not be the same, but they still
can be wonderful!"

Blood and marrow transplant can be emotionally challenging for not only patients, family members and caregivers but for health care providers as well. The Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, Missouri, has honored their survivors at a formal event for the past 25 years. This annual event celebrates the survival of bone marrow transplant patients and their family and friends who have supported them on their cancer journey.

This past September 22nd, the BMT Program hosted over 850 attendees at their 25 th Annual BMT Patient Celebration event. This annual occasion started as a potluck gathering on the unit when Dr. John DiPersio joined the organization.  It has grown into one which now fills a very large ballroom, accommodating all who attend. Each year the event has grown significantly to become an amazing and inspirational evening.

As part of the evening’s program, patients are asked to speak about their experiences, two nursing scholarships are awarded, and an unrelated bone marrow donor is united with his or her recipient. This year, the donor was flown in from Germany, which created quite a remarkable and emotional first-time meeting. This Siteman Cancer Center event not only inspires many patients, it also is a reminder to the Center’s staff of why we do what we do. Thank you to our patients and their families for allowing us to be a part of their journey!
