Fun and Fruitful Fall
October Happenings
These students at Donlon Elementary held a bake sale to raise money for wheelchairs.
Students Inspire Principal
to Match Giving

Donlon Elementary School jwrapped up their 5th year of participating in our From the Heart School Program this month .  Each year they couple their efforts by pairing it with their annual Abilities Awareness Week. Students at Donlon spend time during PE experiencing what it might be like to use a wheelchair for mobility,

One Donlon student was so moved by what he learned regarding mobility issues around the world and what he experienced during Ability Awareness Week that he decided to donate the entire contents of his savings account.  The total was $450 and enough to provide 3 wheelchairs.  He did not want to be recognized which means that the joy for him was completely in the giving.  What a wise and thoughtful  young man!

He began a "ripple effect" in his classroom and at his school.   Donlon's Principal, Janet Gates, was so moved by his giving that she decided to match his efforts by doing the same.  He also inspired his classmates to band together to canvas a neighborhood, raising awareness about the need for wheelchairs.  The students that did so raised $150 in this way.  Amazing to have children inspiring children and then ultimately inspiring us all!

Donlon's total contribution topped all of their previous efforts and they raised $3,800 for our cause which will allow us to provide 25 new wheelchairs for Guatemala
Their delicious efforts raised $100 for Wheelchairs!

Thank you Donlon Cubs for Your Generosity!

Participating October Schools

Fall can be a  quiet time for our program due to the start of the school year, Fun Runs and  Parent-Teacher conferences, but this year has been different and we could not be more pleased.  We continie to have schools reaching out planning meetings and for wheelchair reservations.

Live Oak Elementary
in San Ramon will be enjoying wheelchairs on campus the week of October 20th.  They have their leadership students organize the fundraising portion of our program and they utilize the fact that Halloween is around the corner.   They sell Halloween CandyGrams during wheelchair week and all proceeds from their sales goes to providing wheelchairs.  It will be exciting to find out how they work to inspire their classmates to buy and send CandyGrams.

Country Club Elementary
in San Ramon is using our wheelchairs this month as well and are kicking off their fundraising efforts by coupling us with their Celebrating Diversity Fair.  They will be setting up a wheelchair exploration area where participants will be encouraged to use a wheelchair to go through a very simple but fun obstacle course.  The challenge focusing on how best to manuver a wheelchair in everyday situations.
