4 AM Vigil for the Animals
Tammy, Maria, Nicolette, Lane, and Kim arrived at Eastern Market at 4 am to bare witness to 300 sheep being unloaded and sent to slaughter. We thank them for their courage. Farmed animal's final moments are filled with confusion, fear, and pain. They all want to live, they all fight for their precious life but in the end they are all physically overpowered and their life is taken from them. Below, Kim Korona shared her thoughts.
"Seeing the sheep on the truck at their final moments of life was devastating. Seeing them there, knowing that they only had a few minutes left to live, feeling helpless and wanting to save them was heart-breaking. They were crammed in the truck for an 11-hour ride, three tiers of sheep, all covered in feces. They were looking at us through the holes and my heart went out to them as I told them I was sorry for how they were treated and for what was happening to them. When they were pushed out of the truck the terror showed in their eyes. They didn’t want to go and they tried to turn back but there was nowhere to go. All the sheep were corralled into the slaughterhouse in only about 20 minutes. It all happened so fast and I wish that I could have saved them. Please, if you could not kill an animal yourself, if you could not watch an animal being killed, do not pay someone else to do it. GoVegan."
Moments before unloading and there was only one way out
The sounds of fear coming from the animals was heartbreaking
You can clearly see that each animal is an individual
College Outreach is in Full Swing
The school year began less than a month ago and VegMichigan has already helped to coordinate three events. Last week, VegMichigan teamed up with Eastern Michigan University's VegPlanet to do some vegan outreach on campus. It was a big success and we will be leafleting at many more colleges in October including at the University of Michigan, Wayne State University, EMU, and others. In addition, we are currently working with student groups to finalize plans for movie screenings and vegan food tastings at a number of Michigan universities.

Plant Powered Footballers
Many pro athletes are turning to vegan diets to improve performance, increase energy level, and speed recovery. Even major media outlets such as CNBC have highlighted how going plant-based enhances the performances of professional athletes, including Tom Brady. Supreme Master TV recently created a segment about the many plant-based NFL players, including footage from the VegMichigan VegFest with Detroit Lions Theo Riddick!

Great Time Had By All at Oktoberfest!
Our 3rd Annual Oktoberfest celebration in downtown Detroit was a blast! Well over 100 people came out to enjoy the delicious new vegan menu options at The Old Shillelagh, including Beyond burgers, shepherd's pie, nachos, chili cheese fries, French dip sandwich, soft pretzels, and more! Plus, we all had fun playing vegan trivia and enjoying each others company. Congrats to Jeri Schneider, who won the trivia game and to everyone who took home goodie bags from Fresh Thyme full of vegan products. Special thanks to Peter Fulda for putting together a great trivia game.

Vegan Sources of Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is essential for the formation of red blood cells and healthy function of the brain and nervous system and while it is found in many animal-based foods, it is also fortified in many common vegan foods such as breakfast cereals, non-dairy milks, and meat alternatives. Be sure to check the product's label for specifics. A vegan pantry staple, nutritional yeast, is also a great source of B12. The recommended daily intake of B12 is 2.4mcg for both men and women.

B12 supplements are an effective and inexpensive way to supplement your diet and methylated B12 absorbs even faster into the body. B12 is stored by the body in the liver, so its important not to take excessive amounts or megadoses of B12. Studies have shown that up to 2mg (or 2,000mcg) is safe.
