Read Across Columbia

Over 2,600 books were given to first and second-grade students at five Columbia elementary schools as part of the Heart of Missouri United Way’s Read Across Columbia program, sponsored by MU Health Care.

At the event, remarks were shared by Dr. Brian Yearwood, Superintendent of Columbia Public Schools, Sarah Sicht, Principal of Benton Elementary School, and Andrew Grabau, President and CEO of Heart of Missouri United Way. Katrina Lambrecht, COO of MU Health Care, then read “Tu Youyou's Discovery: Finding a Cure for Malaria" to the children in attendance.

“Read Across Columbia engages the community in having a direct role with our kids in building futures together. By providing books to first and second grade children, we are reaching them early so they can thrive” said Grabau.

Removing Barriers to Arts for Kids in Columbia

"Academic achievement scores for minority and low-income students at Columbia Public Schools lag way behind their peers. But these kids have so much to contribute to our community and we have so much we can contribute to enriching their lives and so this program is an effort to try to make that connection."

Linda Schust, Executive Director of Jabberwocky Studios

We recently caught up with Linda Schust, the Executive Director of Jabberwocky Studios. Jabberwocky Studios runs seasonal programs that offer a variety of arts-based activities in the Columbia area with a focus on serving minority and refugee children. Dance instruction, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) classes, and neighborhood arts activities through The Art Bus are just a few of the programs. In our conversation, Linda specifically talked about the STEAM Program and The Art Bus, the two programs funded in part by Heart of Missouri United Way. Read more...
