In this newsletter, you can expect to find opportunities, events, and other information about UCSF nurses, advanced practice providers, and our global partners working toward global health solutions.

Nurses and advanced practice providers play a pivotal role in improving global population health. CGN's Global Nursing Impact Series offers a platform to highlight their leadership and impact in advancing health equity and to promote collaboration on these initiatives. Each session will feature a 20-minute presentation by invited speakers, followed by a Q&A.*

The lecture series will be held virtually on the second Tuesday of each month and start promptly at 7:00 am - 7:30 am PST/4:00 pm - 4:30 pm CEST.

We are excited to announce that Carol Dawson-Rose, PhD, RN, FAAN, Dean of UCSF School of Nursing and the associate vice chancellor for Nursing Affairs, will be the inaugural speaker for our Global Nursing Impact Series.

"The Landscape of Perioperative Nursing Education in Africa: A Scoping Review"

Not everyone across the globe has access to safe surgical care. There exist stark disparities in surgical mortality between high-income and low-and middle-income countries. Quality perioperative care across the surgical care continuum can mitigate these disparities. Nurses play a vital role in providing quality perioperative care and their competency in perioperative nursing directly impacts surgical outcomes. Across Africa, formal educational opportunities for nurses in perioperative care are not well understood.

This article is an informal scoping review of the existing literature investigating the current state of perioperative nursing education across the African continent.

Over the course of 12 virtual sessions, the CGN Certificate in Global Nursing Program provides participants with an in-depth understanding of foundational concepts in global health sciences, including global nursing practice, health systems, cultural humility, and equitable partnerships. 

This certificate program is ideal for nurses and advanced practice providers (APPs) that are:  

• Interested in exploring key concepts of global health sciences for professional development  
• Exploring global health sciences as a potential career pathway 
• Working in global health, but have not yet had the opportunity to obtain training in global health sciences 

Upcoming Course Dates 

• January 28th, 2025 - April 15th, 2025 
• All courses are held online from 8 a.m. - 10 a.m. PST/5 p.m. - 7 p.m. CEST. 

2024 CGN Cultural Humility Course

Register now for our final 2024 class on November 5th!

We received great feedback from last year's participants and are excited to continue to offer our 3-hour introductory course on cultural humility for all UCSF nurses, APPs, and faculty. Cultural humility is the cornerstone of all global health work and our expertise on this topic is essential to optimize equitable partnerships and cross-cultural collaborations.

CGN members are required to take this course. Register using the link below if you have not already done so.

Our own UCSF nursing/APP faculty and staff are facilitating the course. Looking forward to seeing you there!

There is no cost for the course at this time. 3 CEUs will be provided.

CGN's final Quarterly Meeting of the year will take place on October 8th, 2024, from 12:10 - 1:00 PM PST.

During this meeting, CGN Director Dr. Rebecca Silvers will provide updates on the Center’s recent activities, and you'll have the chance to meet new members of our community.

Presented by the UCSF School of Nursing, UCSF Office of Diversity and Outreach, the We Belong Initiative, and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, attend a free screening of SHIFT Films’ "Everybody's Work: Healing What Hurts Us All," a film that examines the hidden disease plaguing health care in the United States: systemic racism. Following the screening, join a panel discussion and Q&A with experts featured in the film: Aron King, Monica McLemore, and Anna Maria Valdez.,

GICS Wound Care Survey

Pediatric Wound Care Survey

The following survey is an attempt to find out how best nurses care for Pediatric Acute and Chronic Surgical Wounds in your countries. This survey is designed to collect evidence from nurses about wound care.

This survey is brief and should only take about 5-10 minutes to complete.

The results of this survey will be used to create evidence-based guidelines and recommendations that can be used by nurses around the world to improve wound care for children.

Your input is essential in making this happen, and I hope you will take the time to participate.

Your responses will be kept anonymous, and your participation is completely voluntary.

The results of this survey will be published on the website of the Global Initiative for Children's Surgery (GICS) and the International Society of Pediatric Wound Care (ISPWC). By participating in this survey, you will be helping to improve wound care for children everywhere.

Mitchel Erickson DNP, ACNP-C

Associate Clinical Professor | UCSF School of Nursing

Mitchel Erickson, DNP, ACNP-BC, has made a lasting impact on advanced practice and geriatric care at UCSF. A two-time graduate of the UCSF School of Nursing, Erickson elevates the roles of over 600 advanced practice providers (APPs) as UCSF Health’s first Chief of Advanced Practice. He also founded the UC Advanced Practice Strategy Committee, fostering collaboration among leaders across the University of California Health system. He was the inaugural chair of the APRN Advisory Committee for the California Board of Registered Nursing to provide advanced practice expertise to the public and to the board.

In addition to his leadership roles, Erickson spearheaded the creation of UCSF Health’s Age-Friendly Emergency Department (AFED) at the Helen Diller Medical Center. This innovative care model, tailored to meet the unique needs of older adults, earned Gold Level 1 accreditation from ACEP Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation in 2022. As the only nurse on the leadership team, Erickson played a crucial role in developing a financially sustainable, high-quality model that integrates nurse practitioners, pharmacy, social work, and case management. As part of this effort, he has partnered with UCSF collaborators and published his doctoral work and other findings regarding age-friendly health systems.

Beyond his clinical work, Erickson has worked in El Salvador and South Africa as a primary care provider engaged in community health work but currently mentors emergency nurse practitioner students in Haiti through a partnership between UCSF’s Center for Global Nursing and Partners in Health.

SF Bay Area Opportunities

The Roving Community Health Initiative is a team of UCSF clinicians (RN, NP, PA) who work alongside community organizations and volunteers to provide vaccinations, wound care, and harm reduction in San Francisco, primarily in the Tenderloin and South of Market. Most of the work is on "roving teams" serving our unhoused and marginally housed community members.

Shifts are paid but voluntary and on top of your regular position at UCSF. RCHI covers your time (including OT when applicable), so your home department is not charged.

You need manager approval to pick up shifts, and shifts should be fine with your home department schedule.

Regular opportunities are:

• Thursday and Saturday 
• 11 am to 4:30 pm (5 hours paid after 30-minute break deducted)

The first hour of each shift includes prep and orientation for newcomers. Clinicians go out in pairs to work together and support each other. Newcomers are paired with somebody with experience.
