In this newsletter, you can expect to find opportunities, events, and other information about UCSF nurses, advanced practice providers, and our global partners working toward global health solutions.

The UCSF Center for Global Nursing is excited to announce that our Certificate in Global Nursing will return in 2026. Designed for nurses and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), this 12-week program builds the knowledge, skills, and perspectives needed to address priority challenges in global nursing, while fostering collaboration, equity, and innovation across diverse health systems.

Through expert-led sessions, case-based learning, and a vibrant peer community, participants strengthen their leadership and practical tools for impact at the point of care and across health systems.

Tiered pricing for UCSF staff/faculty/students and LMIC partners.

This certificate program is ideal for nurses and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) who are:

• Interested in exploring key concepts of global health sciences for professional development.  
• Exploring global health sciences as a potential career pathway. 
• Working in global health, but have not yet had the opportunity to obtain training in global health sciences.

We are thrilled to welcome a globally diverse cohort of CGN interns whose interests and expertise span global health and nursing across clinical care, leadership, and education.

Over the next nine months, interns will work in dyads across continents on projects led by faculty. They will collaborate with colleagues around the world, build foundations in intercultural partnership and bidirectional learning, and develop skills in global health, research, and academic writing toward scholarly outputs.

Charisse Ahmed, PhD, RN

Assistant Professor,

UCSF School of Nursing

Dr. Charisse Ahmed, PhD, RN, has recently joined UCSF as an Assistant Professor in the UCSF School of Nursing. She is also currently a Research Fellow with the Southern African Institute for Policy and Research in Zambia. In recognition of her global nursing research, Charisse was awarded the 2025 UCSF Global Nursing Research Seed Award through CGN to advance her work on community-engaged HIV and mental health interventions in Zambia.

Charisse collaborates in research with Ikhaya (A Place Called Home) in Zambia, addressing sexual- and gender-based violence among children and adolescents. In 2023, she co-founded Mind Changers–Pals 4 Life (MCP4L), a grassroots mental health advocacy and research advisory comprised of youth, clinicians, survivors, and community leaders. Together with MCP4L, she co-designed Mpata Yathu, a trauma-informed, church-based mental health intervention for adolescent girls and young women exposed to address the syndemic of HIV, mental health, and gender-based violence.

With strong mentorship, local partnerships, and embedded community collaborators, she continues to anchor her nursing research in equity, sustainability, and impact.

Nurses and advanced practice providers play a pivotal role in improving global population health. CGN's Global Nursing Impact Series offers a platform to highlight their leadership and impact in advancing health equity and to promote collaboration on these initiatives. Each session will feature a 20-minute presentation by invited speakers, followed by a Q&A.*

The lecture series is held virtually on the second Tuesday of each month and starts promptly at 7:00 am - 7:30 am PST/4:00 pm - 4:30 pm CEST.

Perioperative Nurse Course in Dar es Salaam

Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), with support from the UCSF Center for Global Nursing (CGN), is launching a five-month Perioperative Nursing Course for registered nurses.

This course, the first of its kind in Africa, provides an opportunity to establish high and consistent standards of perioperative nursing practice for operating room nurses. The blended program of weekly theory sessions, skills labs, and supervised practice builds competence in perioperative assessment, sterile technique and safety, team communication, and protocol-aligned standardized care across orthopedic, obstetrics and gynecology, general and gastrointestinal, pediatric, ophthalmology, ENT, dental, and urology. The course is open to all nurses, with OR nurses especially encouraged to apply.

Pediatric Volunteer Opportunity in Laos

Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) is the only hospital in northern Laos that provides specialty pediatric care, offering free services to underserved families in the region. It focuses on improving access to essential health services while supporting sustainable healthcare through training local providers. Volunteering offers a meaningful way to contribute to the hospital's mission and make a difference in children's lives.

Lao Friends Hospital for Children accepts applications for medical and nursing volunteers throughout the year. All individuals interested in volunteering should be able to spend two months at LFHC during their first visit. Anyone interested is welcome to send their resumes to hr@fwablaos.org.
