THANK YOU for a Fantastic Howler at Bauler!

Happy Halloween neighbors!! Thank you to everyone who attended our Howler at Bauler event this past Saturday!! We had more than 900 attend this year to enjoy a great party on a chilly Chicago fall day.

Save the Date for the Oz Park Holiday Tree Lighting

You are invited to join the Oz Park Advisory Council and Lincoln Central Association as we light up the neighborhood at the annual holiday tree lighting ceremony in Oz Park. Enjoy this magical moment surrounded by the sounds of the holidays.

Oz Park’s 7th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony is on Saturday, December 2 at 5 p.m. in Oz Park (just south of the Tin Man).

The event is free and open to the public. We hope to see you there!

Recap from the Preservation Presentation

On October 24, Lincoln Central Association joined several other local neighborhood organizations to host a community meeting with Landmarks Illinois and Preservation Chicago to discuss what you should know about the meaningful buildings in our community.

Zoning Committee Update

We join our RANCH Triangle neighbors in opposition of a proposed Sterling Bay project that would put two glassy high rises (27 and 16 stories) at 1840 N. Marcey St. and 2033 N. Kingsbury. The parcel is outside of Sterling Bay’s Lincoln Yards, but the proposed structures mimic the size and look of that proposed development. 

RANCH and Alderman Scott Waguespack hosted a public meeting regarding this proposal Oct. 16, which was well attended.

We and RANCH welcome reasonable development and density, especially when it brings on-site affordable housing. This Marcey Street project is too tall, too dense, too glassy and completely out of context with its immediate brick and masonry neighbors. It’s a fallacy that new construction must be glassy and outsized to be successful: look at the wonderfully modern four-story brick structure at Lincoln/Halsted/Fullerton, an up-to-the minute building that feels like it’s always been there. 

LCA zoning committee member Deirdre Graziano points out that the Marcey Street area had been an industrial corridor. She urges developers to create loft-like brick structures that would honor the past and blend into the surrounding community, creating a walkable neighborhood with boutiques, restaurants and open green space. We have examples of such successful neighborhoods in Chicago (18th Street Lofts) and in New York (Soho and Tribeca). We believe that Sterling Bay developments should weave into Lincoln Park and Bucktown: two walkable, desirable, low-rise neighborhoods. 

Along with RANCH, we object to any project that fails to address the need for updated infrastructure, traffic calming measures, green space, schools, libraries, fire and police. 

How to Help Local Asylum Seekers

With an increased number of Asylum seekers at the 18th District police station, more community assistance is needed! Organizers are asking for help with volunteers and helping to feed these new community members.

Here are three ways that you can help:

1. Meal Delivery: A District 18 Meal Delivery website has been set up to help provide meals to the people at the police station. Learn more and sign up to provide a meal here.
2. Donations: Please do not drip clothing off at the 18th District police station. Clothing donations and donations of personal care items for asylum seekers can be arranged with the Church of the Ascension at 1133 N LaSalle. The Church has a Refugee Free Store for the area. Call Liz to Schedule a drop off time at 920-254-4735. Park Community Church at 1001 N Crosby is collecting clothing for Refugee Free Stores in Rogers Park. Call Ruth for more information about how to donate at Park at 312-833-2569.
3. Help with Tutoring: Project Education Plus has regular after school tutoring and now English Language Learning tutoring. Call Vince Carter at 312-520-0905 if you want to volunteer to tutor. Spanish speaking is not necessary but helpful.

Lincoln Park Art Night Set for November 2

DePaul Art Museum, Leslie Wolfe Gallery, Madron Gallery, and gallery 1871 reunite for the 2nd annual Lincoln Park Art Night. Lincoln Park Art Night will feature FREE VIP Mini-coaches offering hop-on/hop-off service for three hours on Thursday, November 2 from 5:30-8:30 PM.

Life Cycles at DePaul Art Museum highlights artworks from DPAM’s permanent collection, in conversation with other contemporary Chicago artists. Artists include Gertrude Abercrombie, Selva Aparicio, Andrea Carlson, Brendan Fernandes, Devin T. Mays, Ed Paschke, and many more.

Leslie Wolfe Gallery presents Triad. Three artists: Norman Baughter, Shel Howard Beugen, and Sandra Holubow; three dots on the map of Old Town; three friends, colleagues, and neighbors, each with a unique history that gives shape to their individual vision; three different perceptions manifested in their art.

Joseph Friebert: The Experimental Years at Madron Gallery showcases Joseph Friebert’s (1908–2002) journey into semi-abstraction, an in-depth look at the more than two decades where Friebert pushed himself in a new artistic direction, inspired by urban architecture and rural landscapes.

With The Resilience of Hope: New Work by Carrie Seid, gallery 1871 proudly presents the first solo show of Carrie Seid’s work in Chicago in over twenty years. The Chicago-bred, Tucson-based artist creates three-dimensional sculptures using translucent and reflective materials that merge color and form to create works that are mysterious and magical.
