Running for Good in the Heart of the Neighborhood

By Paul Shea, Lincoln Central Association Board Member

What a wonderful time of year in Chicago! Although the summer is gone and the daylight hours are getting shorter, there is still plenty of nice weather left, and a lot to do and see in the City of Big Shoulders. This past month also saw the amazing annual spectacle of the Chicago Marathon as 35,000 runners took to the streets through many of our neighborhoods filled with spectators cheering them on. And for the second year in a row, Chicago is home to a new World’s Record.

This time in the women’s race, by Ruth Chepngetich in a blistering time of 2:09:56!

On Saturday, the day before the Chicago Marathon, we were witness to the first Marathon ever run entirely within the boundaries of the Lincoln Central Association, the brainchild of Matt Brusich of the 2000 block of North Cleveland. In fact, if you were in the immediate vicinity of DeNucci’s restaurant on October 12th, you may have seen Matt running a total of 79.3 times around that block in a fully certified Marathon, whimsically called Matt’s “Homegrown Marathon.”

I caught up with Matt to find out what had inspired him to create this totally unique event. He told me he’s always liked a creative challenge to push himself; like the time he completed a full day bike ride, starting in Lincoln Park at sunrise and arriving in Michigan to watch that same sun set from the other side of Lake Michigan. “Go big or go home” he told me.

But it was more than just Matt being Matt (as his wife Maggie would say). He had a special purpose. He had run the Chicago Marathon back in 2012 for charity and decided he would run this one for charity, too. And he found the perfect fit in Lincoln Park Community Services, which has provided year-round support to Chicago’s homeless for the last 40 years.

Matt created a website to promote his fundraising efforts and enlisted sponsorship of DeNucci’s restaurant to support him in this endeavor. DeNucci’s embraced their role by naming and serving a pizza made special for the occasion called “Matt’s Homegrown Hot Honey Hustle” and encouraging their patrons to cheer for Matt as he wound his way past their sidewalk tables throughout the day. They also donated part of the sales of the pizzas to Matt’s cause as well as a Pizza and Pasta Night for LPCS for 83 people.

As if running a marathon wasn’t enough, Matt also devised some unique challenges to encourage extra pledges; such as the $1010.00 donated specifically for 31st lap with someone on piggyback. You can see the other zany ideas Matt included on his website here. Overall, Matt raised over $13,000 for his cause!

Just as important, Matt really enjoyed the sense of community created through this event. Of course he had his own crew; wife Maggie, mom Karen, his siblings Dave and Clare, and a host of friends that cheered wildly as he passed through 79 times, but also the neighbors who were around that day and subsequently supported him and his cause. Congratulations Matt, on setting the course record in the first ever marathon run in the Heart of our Neighborhood! Even if it was a little slower than Ruth’s time from that “other” marathon.
