What a wonderful time of year in Chicago! Although the summer is gone and the daylight hours are getting shorter, there is still plenty of nice weather left, and a lot to do and see in the City of Big Shoulders. This past month also saw the amazing annual spectacle of the Chicago Marathon as 35,000 runners took to the streets through many of our neighborhoods filled with spectators cheering them on. And for the second year in a row, Chicago is home to a new World’s Record.

On Saturday, the day before the Chicago Marathon, we were witness to the first Marathon ever run entirely within the boundaries of the Lincoln Central Association, the brainchild of Matt Brusich of the 2000 block of North Cleveland. In fact, if you were in the immediate vicinity of DeNucci’s restaurant on October 12th, you may have seen Matt running a total of 79.3 times around that block in a fully certified Marathon, whimsically called Matt’s “Homegrown Marathon.”
I caught up with Matt to find out what had inspired him to create this totally unique event. He told me he’s always liked a creative challenge to push himself; like the time he completed a full day bike ride, starting in Lincoln Park at sunrise and arriving in Michigan to watch that same sun set from the other side of Lake Michigan. “Go big or go home” he told me.
But it was more than just Matt being Matt (as his wife Maggie would say). He had a special purpose. He had run the Chicago Marathon back in 2012 for charity and decided he would run this one for charity, too. And he found the perfect fit in Lincoln Park Community Services, which has provided year-round support to Chicago’s homeless for the last 40 years.
