Let's Talk About It: Mental Illness Awareness Week | Boone County Alliance

You've probably heard of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, but did you know there's a week in October set aside for mental health, too? This year, Mental Illness Awareness Week runs October 4–10, and it's a good excuse for all of us to slow down, check in, and keep the conversation going.

Coalition Highlights

September was a month of strong community collaboration and shared opportunities for prevention and wellness across Boone County. BCA partnered with NKY Health, local schools, community organizations, and prevention professionals to expand access to resources and engage youth, families, and community members in meaningful prevention activities. Tobacco- and vape-free messaging reached approximately 3,000 people through the Tobacco Free Tailgate, while interactive activities at Conner and Cooper High Schools reached more than 350 students with opportunities to build healthy decision-making, peer support, and positive coping skills.

Mental health and suicide prevention efforts also expanded through 988 resource kits provided to Ockerman Middle School and Conner High School, outreach at the Ethan’s Purpose 5K, and resources shared for upcoming QPR training. Throughout the month, BCA continued building partnerships through regional meetings, professional development, youth summit planning, and collaboration with schools and community partners. These shared efforts demonstrate the power of working together to connect individuals with resources, strengthen protective factors, and create healthier, more supportive communities.

Partner Spotlight: Mental Health America

BCA is proud to highlight Mental Health America (MHA) and its commitment to promoting mental health, preventing mental illness, and connecting individuals and communities with resources and support. Through education, advocacy, screening tools, and community-based initiatives, MHA helps make mental health conversations more accessible and encourages people to seek support before a crisis occurs. Organizations like MHA provide valuable opportunities for prevention professionals, schools, families, and community partners to share resources and strengthen mental wellness efforts. By working together to increase awareness, reduce stigma, and connect people with support, we can help build communities where mental health is treated as an important part of overall health and well-being.
