`2025 Engineering Career Day

As a public service each year, our NJSPE Educational Foundation invites NJ high schools to participate in Engineering Career Day held at the Busch Campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey. In addition to our foundation, this program is supported by corporate sponsors, public authorities, local colleges, and universities.

Our foundation is looking to recruit top-notch volunteers as committee members for our 2025 Engineering Career Day program. As volunteers, many of our members have developed interrelationship skills to help advance their engineering careers. Our committee members have found Engineering Career Day to be a very rewarding program.

New Jersey Society of Professional Engineers Educational Foundation invites you to be a committee member in our 2025 Engineering Career Day program, which is scheduled for Wednesday, March 19, 2025.

Legislative Update

Federal update- Possible enactment of the “Pro Codes Act”

On the Federal level, while everyone is focusing on the Congressional and Presidential races the National Society of Professional Engineers are focusing on possible detrimental legislation.

NSPE is considering action regarding the opposition to the Pro Codes Act (H.R. 1631/S. 835), currently being discussed in Congress. This bill, if passed, would mandate that standards development organizations (SDOs) make their technical standards publicly accessible for free, which could have significant repercussions for both the organizations that develop these standards and the licensed engineers who rely on them to safeguard public health, safety, and welfare. While it is believed that the bill is well intended, the unintended consequences could be extremely harmful if implemented and given NSPE’s focus on engineering integrity, safety, and support for the organizations that develop and maintain technical standards, supporting this bill does not seem to align with its goals:

  • Impact on Public Safety: If SDOs struggle to fund the creation of high-quality, consensus-based standards, it could lead to delays or reductions in the quality of new safety standards. This would ultimately affect public safety.
  • While the Pro Codes Act aims to improve access to standards for the public, it might do so at the expense of the sustainability of SDOs. NSPE would need to weigh whether the increased accessibility is worth the potential long-term consequences to the development of critical engineering standards.
  • Organizations such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) (which oppose this bill and have issued grassroots this week) argue that the bill could significantly harm their ability to fund the development of new standards by making their work freely available once it is incorporated into law. Since NSPE often collaborates with SDOs to promote high engineering standards and safety, supporting a bill that weakens these organizations' ability to function could indirectly harm the profession.

With Congress on break this is something to keep an eye on in the lame duck session starting in November.

Enroll in the Enterprise program

Enterprise membership allows a company to sponsor NSPE membership for multiple employee engineers and to design specialized benefits around their needs. Through the Enterprise program, NSPE will develop a package option perfectly suited to your organization.

Why should your company enroll its engineers in NSPE?

  • NSPE membership is an employment benefit that will help you hire and keep the best engineers a real competitive edge for your company.
  • By joining NSPE at a corporate level, your clients will recognize your company's commitment to engineering and ethical best practices, and will trust that your engineers will provide them with the best service available.
  • Your employees will recognize your commitment to their professional growth, and will remain loyal and engaged.
  • Employees will benefit from maximum access, value and convenience in everything NSPE membership has to offer.
  • Your company may also be able to save on its professional liability premiums. Through NSPE benefit partner Victor, qualifying engineering firms are eligible for an underwriting premium credit of up to 5% if at least 50% of the firm's professional staff are NSPE members.
