Dear Friends,

In a world that often pulls us in many directions, the simple act of being present has never been more powerful.

I see this echoed in CIS’s campaign, Being Present Matters, and it reminds me how simply showing up can change lives. Whether it’s being present for a friend, a neighbor, or a student, our presence – in times of celebration or tribulation – is often the greatest gift we can offer.

We’re excited to bring this theme to life at our upcoming Illuminate event on November 10th. Illuminate is an evening to reflect on the strength of standing together, honor the impact of being there for each other, and celebrate students and our communities. Each luminary we light collectively with you, our network of supporters, will symbolize this powerful presence, a beacon of hope and support in a student’s journey.

Want to step up to the challenge? More than 5,000 CIS partners, donors, and advocates will receive this message. If every person reading this lights one luminary for $10, we will raise $50,000 towards our mission. Please join us in illuminating the power of the CIS network and sending the message to students that you will be present to support their success.

Thank you for being present in your community in ways big and small. We look forward to sharing an evening with you and honoring the meaningful connections that make all the difference.

Crowned! 👑

Congratulations to Clarence and Jada for being crowned Homecoming Prince and Princess at St. John's High School this month!

Their Site Coordinators (past: Miracle Mozzee; present: Donta' Brown and Steven Jeffcoat) speak so highly of Clarence and Jada, praising them as hardworking, dedicated students who consistently make the A/B honor roll and lead by example.

“Our AmeriCorps Student Support Coaches are an invaluable part of our team, helping us bridge gaps and provide critical support to students. They make a real difference with their energy, commitment, and heart.” – Lee McLeod, CIS AmeriCorps Program Director

Spotlighting our Partnership with AmeriCorps

This national service program connects members with community organizations to make an impact nationwide. Through the CIS AmeriCorps Program, we place dedicated Student Support Coaches in our schools to further extend our support to students and families, ensuring that every child has access to the resources and personalized support they need to thrive.

This year, 11 AmeriCorps members are working across nine schools, serving students in essential areas like credit recovery, mentoring, academic assistance, and behavioral support. Their hands-on involvement helps us enhance the CIS model by providing tailored support and fostering meaningful relationships with students who benefit from it most. Here’s where our current AmeriCorps members are making an impact alongside Site Coordinators:

Herbert A. Wood Elementary School – Toshiya Gaddis and Genesis Ragland

Horrell Hill Elementary School – Shanna Brown

North Charleston High School – Sade Major

North District Middle School – Tyron O'Banner Jr.

Pine Ridge Middle School – Jada White

Sandel Elementary School – Kyree Huggins

Sedgefield Middle School – Shakira Howard

St. Andrews Middle School – Teryn Thibodeau and Tashawna Walker-Miller

Southeast Middle School – Harold Goethe III

Thank you, AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps members, for helping us light the path to brighter futures!
