Building Reach Code for New Construction

As Chair of the Transportation and Environment Committee, I'm proud that our proposed changes will make new buildings in San Jose safer and more environmentally friendly. This policy is good for the economy and good for the environment. The ordinance prohibits natural gas infrastructure in new detached accessory dwelling units, single-family, and low-rise multi-family buildings starting January 1st, 2020.

City News & Updates

San José Digital Inclusion Partnership

San José is the first city in the country to pledge to close the Digital Divide through the establishing the Digital Inclusion Partnership, a $24 million cross-sector fund that will be distributed in grant awards over a ten-year period. The Partnership will target five key components of Digital Inclusion.

There are three workshops to learn about eligibility, program design to achieve the goals outlined in the application, measuring performance, and more. Visit here for details.

The first workshop is October 15th at the Bascom Branch Library.

Electricity Bills

Expect higher electricity bills this month, but not because of SJCE. On 10/1 PG&E increased its electric distribution rates by 8.7% and gas rates by 3.3%. SJCE is holding its rates steady, so your electric generation rates are still lower than PG&E. By being an SJCE customer, you're saving money.

Your electricity bill is made up of three parts: electric generation (SJCE), electric delivery (PG&E), and, for many people, gas (PG&E, and sometimes, a third party provider).  SJCE has no control over electric delivery and gas.

Pavement Updates

Paving work continues across the city, with preparation and paving work occurring on almost 200 major and residential street segment here.

Lots of repaving means frequent parking restrictions, multiple detours, dust, and noise. Be prepared by clicking on our Pavement Projects Map to see which streets are scheduled this year. If you see a street of interest to you, check out our weekly pavement updates on the right side of your screen, under "News & Announcements" to learn about our paving activities as they move through San José.

Medicine Disposal

Don't flush unused or expired medicines down the toilet, the drain, or put in the garbage. Find a free drop-off bin near you.

When unused or expired pharmaceuticals, or medicines, are disposed of down the drain or flushed down the toilet, they flow through the sanitary sewer system to the San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility. The Facility was not designed to remove all pharmaceutical compounds, so trace amounts may pass through the Facility and be released into the Bay.

The major concerns to date regarding the presence of medications in surface water bodies have been interference with growth and reproduction in aquatic organisms such as fish and frogs, and increased bacterial resistance to antibiotics in humans.

Teal Pumpkin Project

The Teal Pumpkin Project is a movement to raise awareness of food allergies and to create a safer, more inclusive Halloween for all trick-or-treaters. Putting a teal pumpkin on your doorstep will let trick-or-treaters know that your house is food allergy-friendly.

This can mean that you offer non-food treats or trinkets, such as glow sticks or small toys, and/or that you have allergy-friendly candy which is free of the top 9 allergens. This simple act allows kids to enjoy the same allergy-friendly trinkets or treats whether they have food allergies or not. Teal is the new orange, and we hope you will join us in painting Halloween teal. Getting started is easy. More information here

1. Provide non-food treats and/or allergy-friendly candy (free of the top 9 allergens, including sesame) for trick-or-treaters

2. Place a teal pumpkin in front of your home to alert trick-or-treaters that you have a food-allergy friendly home

3. Add your home to the Teal Pumpkin Project map

4. Spread the word! Share the Teal Pumpkin Project with your friends and family

San Jose Museum of Art Seeks Art Docents to Present in Classrooms

San Jose Museum of Art is recruiting for its 2020 Let's Look at Art docent class. Give back to your community in a meaningful way by becoming a part of the largest arts education program in Santa Clara County.

Docents are trained to take portfolio art into K-5 classrooms or digital art into 6-12 classrooms and give FREE presentations that foster communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills. We offer a semi-flexible training schedule, presentations that are geographically close to where docents live (thereby solidifying community bonds), and choice as to grade level presentations. We also offer many social opportunities, such as curated trips to other Bay Area museums, art making field trips, guest artists who speak four times yearly, occasional weekend art trips, and biannual parties.

No previous art experience is required. Let's Look at Art will serve its millionth student sometime in 2020-21-will YOU be the docent who takes us there?  Training begins in January 2020.

For information about volunteering for the Let's Look at Art program, please send email to [email protected] or call 408.291.5393.
