Economic Development

Work has begun on remodeling the closed car repair shop at 6116 N. Elston Ave. A permit for the work was issued in August.

Alderman Gardiner has introduced an ordinance to lift the moratorium on new packaged liquor licenses on Milwaukee Avenue between Ardmore Avenue and Peterson Avenue. The Chamber has not been notified of the reason for the lifting of the moratorium, but it may be to allow for a new convenience store to open inside the former 7-Eleven store at Milwaukee and Austin avenues.

COVID-19 testing is now taking place in the parking lot of the former Produce Center, 5820 N. Milwaukee Ave. Walk-up and drive-thru testing is available.

Zymi Bakery is seeking to open at 5806 N. Milwaukee Ave. It specializes in desserts by pastry chef Giannis Tasopoulos.

The Chicago Public Schools is planning to purchase the former Saint Cornelius School, 5252 N. Long Ave., along with the rectory and convent for a new early education center. The church remains part of the new Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity Parish.

A phone repair business is opening at 6333 N. Milwaukee Ave., and a hair salon is seeking to open at 5525 N. Milwaukee Ave. The salon requires the issuance of a special use from the Zoning Board of Appeals, which will hold a public hearing on the matter.

Board Member Recognition

Carrie Lawlor

Carrie Lawlor has been with Norwood Life Society for the last 5 1/2 years. She was newly promoted to Norwood Senior Center. She has been with the Chamber since 2011 with Nadig Newspapers and 2016 with Norwood Life Society. She has been a director on the board for the last year. She joined the Chamber to become more engaged in the neighborhood businesses. She became a board member because she likes to be "in the room where it happens." She likes to "be of greater use." The biggest value she gets from being a Chamber member is establishing relationships while contributing to the success of the community. Carrie has lived in Gladstone Park since 2002 with her two children. She would like other chamber members to know that it is ok to speak up and make suggestions.
