The reason we write books

Words from your Houston SCBWI Illustrator Coordinator!

Hello and Howdy Houston!

ArtOber is here! The calendar tells us the leaves should be changing and the air getting colder, although the mind requires a bit of imagination for the good people of Houston, Texas to believe it! Having grown up in Colorado, I spend my fall days with one hand on my Jeep keys fully prepared to drive north for REAL fall weather! I may or may not run the air conditioning hard enough to validate turning on my gas fireplace! However, there is one thing we can ALL do this fall, and that is ILLUSTRATE TOGETHER!

Marissa Valdez will be joining us for her webinar, I will be hosting a new day and time for an Illustrator Sketch Night, and don’t forget about #Artober from the home office! Read on for more details!

Marissa Valdez, NYTimes #1 Best Selling Illustrator, webinar on October 5, 2024

October 17, 2024, will be an Illustrator Sketch Night from 6:00pm – 9:00pm at PopStroke on 23110 Grand Circle Boulevard Katy, TX. (writers welcome too!)

Speaking of ArtOber!! Check out the list of drawing prompts from our very own SCBWI illustrator crew in the home office!

Illustrator Sketch Night, November 21, 2024 from 6 - 9:00pm!! Location TBA

Hope to see you out there,

FOLK WISDOM & OTHER THOUGHTS

By Jim Smolski

The smallest ray of sunshine can start a leaf to turn and look with hope. I want to be the sunshine that creates that moment for at least one leaf every day.

The Boats I Haven't Missed

Sometimes I think about the many times in my life I missed the boat.

But the thoughts go away quickly as I look back.

I know I have so much to be thankful for because of all the boats I didn’t miss.
