Wrapping up the fire season

This has been an excellent season of neighborhood engagement and learning. We have seen growth in the number of Fire Adapted Communities and Firewise neighborhoods and want to thank everyone for all of their hard work. Moving into the winter months, it is a good time to goal set for the upcoming Spring and Summer. Identify what you would like to see your community accomplish in the future and make a plan to achieve your action plan goals if you are a Firewise neighborhood!

FAC Updates
Visit our website
In the past few months, we have worked hard to assist communities in their last workdays of the season. We also held a Firewise informational workshop last month, which had excellent turn out! There are now close to 60 Firewise neighborhoods in the Basin which is awesome to see.

We have also been boothing at community events, such as the recent Fire Festival in September. For up-to-date information on many topics related to wildfire preparedness, such as fire defensive landscaping to new prescribed burn and projects taking place in Lake Tahoe, check out our website. We have been posting press releases, updating maps, and writing articles on all of these subjects!

Fire Adapted Communities
Did You Know?
Fire Adapted Communities and Firewise are not the same thing! See the diagram to learn about how both programs compare and contrast:
A new map tool
There is a new map on our website that showcases fire restrictions throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin. The map shows who owns the land and what type of fire is permitted. “Fire restrictions have been a topic of confusion for residents and visitors alike,” said TFFT Incident Commander Isaac Powning. “In a region defined by two states, five counties, and one city, it can be challenging to know who manages the land and what the rules are on that land. This map will help remedy that confusion.”

The map will be updated each season when fire restriction announcements change. It is meant to be a user-friendly tool and is linked on our website.

Looking to the Future
COMING UP

  • High School Ambassador Program- We have been connecting interested high school students at local Tahoe high schools with neighborhood leaders desiring extra assistance. The students will help with various activities such as workdays and outreach throughout the school year and receive volunteer hours for this work. If you know a high schooler who may want to become involved, have them email us at fire@tahoercd.org.

  • SLT Game Night- South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is holding a community game night on Wednesday, October 30th at 6:30pm. This features an emergency preparedness community board game at South Lake Brewing Co. The game has been designed specifically for residents and visitors to South Lake Tahoe. Light hors d'oeuvres will also be available for participating tables. Plus, prizes will be given out. More information can be found here

  • Firewise Zoom Presentation- We are holding an informational Firewise application webinar on Tuesday, November 12th from 11am-12pm PST. This will be an hour-long webinar going into detail about how to complete your Firewise application step by step. Anyone is free to attend and ask questions. The meeting invite can be found here

Meet Martin from Lake Valley Fire!

Martin has nearly 25 years in the fire service, having worked previously for San Luis Obispo County Fire / CALFIRE and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) before starting his career with the Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) in 2001. He is currently assigned to the LVFPD Wildfire Division. Captain Goldberg holds a degree in Soil Science with a concentration in Environmental Science from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Martin has actively participated in the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT) since its inception in 2008 and is recognized by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) as a qualified forester. Martin has fostered defensible space and home hardening on private lands in South Lake Tahoe for close to 15 years. His greatest accomplishment in the wildfire prevention field is having known that his home hardening and hazardous fuel reduction efforts in Christmas Valley and the Upper Apache neighborhoods contributed to firefighter success during the Caldor Fire.

Outside of work, Martin and his family enjoy all that living in South Lake Tahoe has to offer including hiking, biking and skiing. Family and community is most important to Martin and he is grateful to live and work in South Lake Tahoe.
Community Involvement
Building on our connections and existing relationships to make a BIG difference:

  • The Fall is a good time to rake your pine needles while they are still manageable. For South Lake Tahoe residents, you can use your green waste bin provided by South Tahoe Refuse to pile the needles and green waste you collect. Additional paper bags may also be set out for collection. More information on this can be found here
