Weaning Beef Calves

Weaning a beef calf is likely the most stressful event in the animal’s life. Future growth and reproductive performance can be compromised by health challenges encountered through the weaning process. Consequently, proper management aimed at reducing stress and preparing the beef animal for the next stage of production is critical to reach its genetic potential.

Wasatch Back Fruit Tree Project

For those of you who are currently growing apple or peach trees, or those interested in doing so, check out our local project - the Wasatch Back Fruit Tree Project. The aim is to provide data-driven recommendations for the best varieties of apples and peaches to grow along the Wasatch Back. To do so, we're enlisting those who are successfully growing apple and peaches to report on their fruit trees—by doing so, we can aggregate local information to benefit our community! We're especially interested in any old trees you have growing. Reach out to wesley.crump@usu.edu if you'd like to participate—it's simple and fun! The data from 2024 are posted on our website.

USU Extension Gardener's Almanac For September

As the growing season ends, it’s tempting to leave last year’s plants and flowers until spring. But did you know that garden cleanup in the fall is one of the best ways to set yourself up for success next year? Here’s why we recommend clearing out garden debris and dead flowers each year:

  • Pest Prevention: Many insects overwinter in dead plant material. Removing it reduces the number of pests you’ll face in the spring.
  • Disease Control: Fungal spores and bacteria can survive on leaves, stems, and fruit. Cleaning up keeps diseases from spreading year after year.
  • Weed Management: Pulling weeds before they drop seeds helps reduce weed problems next season.
  • Healthy Soil: Adding cleaned debris to a compost pile (instead of leaving it in the garden) helps recycle nutrients safely.
  • Stronger Plants: A clean slate in spring makes it easier for new plants to thrive without competition.

Taking a little time now will protect your garden and make next year’s work lighter. Check out our full October tips and checklist.

Happy gardening!
