The Mentoring Program seeks to enhance networks of Community Development professionals and support mid to senior level professionals, and board members who demonstrate potential for advancement and growth into positions of leadership within the field.

Congratulations to the New Santander Fellows

The Santander Fellows are a cohort of senior and executive community development professionals of color who receive a scholarship to participate in the Institute for Nonprofit Practice management training program. The Mel King Institute will support the cohort with additional programming and networking opportunities as part of our shared efforts to support advancing leaders of color within the Community Development field.

This “state of the art” governance capacity-building training series will provide your board members with innovative, best practices; concrete strategies for integrating a racial equity lens in your governance practices; and tools to help strengthen your Board’s effectiveness and ability to impact your community.  This series is specifically designed for CDC boards, helping them engage more directly with, and become more accountable to the diverse communities they serve.

This highly experiential training will be offered to 3‐5 CDCs who will work together as board teams, along with their Executive Directors. Participation includes two full-day training sessions, a board self-assessment, and one hour of coaching between sessions.

This webinar will focus on the significant changes to the CHAPA board structure (Citizens’ Housing and Planning Association) made in 2016. CHAPA board and staff leaders will reflect on the change process.

If you don’t have a background in development but do have an interest and/or you’d just like to understand the basics better, this class covers the real deal on deals…from idea to occupied.

This course will provide an overview of contemporary community development including its values, goals, theory of change and strategies. The day is designed to examine the challenges and opportunities confronting community developers today.  
Want to build your team’s green building capacity? LISC Boston, Massachusetts Housing Partnership, USGBC MA Chapter, and the Mel King Institute will host a daylong, no-cost LEED Green Associate Exam Preparation Class on Thursday, October 18, 2018 from 8:30AM to 5:00PM at Castle Square Tenants Organization, 476 Tremont Street in Boston. Participation is free for affordable housing professionals (a $350 value per participant) but priority will be given to nonprofit and government partners.


Upcoming MKI Events
Resident Leader Training 

The Resident Leader Training is a free two-day training for any resident of public housing who would like to enhance their leadership skills, learn about new state regulations, or get involved in a tenant group. Leaders of Local Tenant Organizations, “Task Forces” and other tenant groups are highly encouraged to attend. The training focuses on state regulations about tenant participation and also covers essentials leadership skills such as team building, outreach, conflict resolution, and running meetings.
