A Tribute to our Chapter Volunteers!
What is a Volunteer? According to Merrian-Webster, a ‘Volunteer’ is defined as “someone who does something without being forced to do it!”
To our Member Volunteers, THANK YOU!
The chapter appreciates these attributes you bring to helping ensure we are successful:
-
Reliability: Your consistent presence and reliability are invaluable. Whether it’s helping with events, assisting with tasks or supporting our programs, your reliability sets an excellent example and encourages others to get involved, too.
- Positive Attitude: Your positive “will-do” attitude and enthusiasm uplift everyone around you. Your willingness to tackle any task with a smile makes a difference in our Chapter.
- Team Player: You seamlessly collaborate with fellow volunteers and staff. Your teamwork and adaptability contribute to our success.
Our chapter accomplishments confirm that the strength of our organization is due to YOU, our volunteers. The time and effort you give to benefit our Chapter is what ensures we consistently exceed the expectations of our members and are in a position to offer impactful and relevant programs which focus on Personal and Professional Development along with Educational and Networking Opportunities to all our members.
Call to Action: While we celebrate our current volunteers, it’s even MORE FUN when we encourage other members to join in and find their niche as a volunteer. If you’re ready to jump in and make an impact, or there’s a member who might be interested in volunteering, please invite them to connect with us. Together, we can create an even greater impact!

Let’s turn the tide on breast cancer!
Janet Murphy-Stott
My name is Janet Murphy-Stott, I am an MPI Member, and on September 14, 2009, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I don’t think I was fully prepared to hear those words and they changed my life. At that time in my life, it was the most important journey I had been on, and it taught me so much about myself which allowed me to make each day count from that day forward.
I underwent a right skin-sparring mastectomy that December 17, 2009, which was followed by (13) additional surgeries/procedures and (5) years of Tamoxifen therapy. Fast forward (15) years, there has been no recurrence and I remain cancer-free.
I am a survivor!
Some Important Facts:
- 1 in 8 women is the US will be diagnosed with breast cancer
- 2800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer – Yes, men can develop breast cancer too!
- When caught early, the 5-year survival rate is 99%
-
Non-Hispanic white women and non-Hispanic black women have the highest rates of breast cancer overall. Hispanic women have the lowest.
- More than 168,000 women are living with metastatic breast cancer
- EVERYONE is at risk in developing breast cancer
- PREVENTION IS KEY
Ways to Help Your Body and Recovery:
- Eating well: protein enriched foods, fiber, fruits, vegetables and low in fat foods
- Exercising: This can help with fatigue from treatments or stress. Try Yoga, stretching and breathing exercises
- Getting enough sleep: If you are having chemo and/or radiation treatments, rest when you need to. Treatments can be exhausting
- Screenings: Get regular screenings as recommended by your doctor
- Managing Stress: Find a way to express your feelings whether it is though art, crafting or confiding in a friend
- Positive attitude: This will benefit your over quality of life regardless of where the journey takes you
- Limit alcohol consumption: no more than 1 drink per day
I ask all of you, today, if you haven’t done so, please schedule those yearly physicals, mammograms and be vigilant with monthly self-examinations. I can honestly tell you, that my diligence in monthly self-examinations saved my life and it could possibly save yours.
“Breast Cancer is a journey, not a destination”
