Dear Latin Americanist Community,
Welcome to the new academic year! I am happy to share information about the activities we are planning at the Latin American Institute. This year, we are launching a new series on Peru with the collaboration of the Consulate General of Peru in Los Angeles, our own Andean Working Group, and many faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students conducting research on Peru and Andean societies and cultures. This series follows in the footsteps of a wonderful event organized by the Fowler Museum, the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology, and partners last May, celebrating 200 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and Peru and decades of collaboration between UCLA and Peruvian institutions in the field of archeology.
We begin with our traditional Fall reception on Tuesday, October 6, which will start at 4 pm in the South Lawn of Bunche Hall (notice the change of venue from previous years). The reception will feature welcoming remarks from the Consul General of Peru, Mr. Jaime Casafranca, Peruvian cuisine, and folk dancers. Not to be missed! RSVP here. Our series on Peru starts the following day, on Wednesday, October 7, with a talk by Solsiré Cusicanqui, a postdoctoral fellow with the UCLA Center for Early Global Studies, entitled “Los objetos y sus comunidades: arqueología, saberes vivos y prácticas museísticas del Perú a UCLA.” Learn more details here. Dr. Cusicanqui is a leading organizer of the exhibit “Kené: Lines of Healing, Paths of Connection,” presented by the Fowler Museum at UCLA. The exhibit invites visitors to explore the artistic and cultural world of the Shipibo-Konibo people of the Peruvian Amazon. As part of this event, three Shipibo-Konibo artists will be in residence at the Fowler Museum between late October and early November to create a mural that will be on view for 10 years—this activity is proudly co-sponsored by the LAI. Find out details here.
Our Peru series will continue on October 19 with a webinar presentation by Professor Jessica Retis (University of Arizona), who will share fresh insights from her ongoing research on “Peruvian Diasporas beyond Latin America: Migration, Transnationalism, and Media in Europe and Asia.” Register for this event here. The centers, working groups, and Outreach Program of the LAI are organizing several other events in October, so please check our calendar.
Finally, we are still navigating through turbulent financial times, particularly with federal funding competitions eliminated without notice. In this difficult context, your contributions make a world of difference. Please consider donating to the mission of the LAI. Thanks!
Rubén Hernández-León,
Director of the UCLA Latin American Institute
