As you read through this newsletter, note all of the opportunities our students and staff have taken to make each day better than the last. In less than a month of school, our students and staff have much to be proud of; they have chosen to make a difference in the lives of each other, and to positively impact our community.

Congratulations to our FLES Dolphins who raised over $500 for Childhood Cancer Research over a three-day period of time by supporting the G9 effort!

Mrs. Jakubowski’s third graders learned how to differentiate between five types of asters growing in our school prairie: New England, smooth, sky blue, frost, and heath. Beside the obvious difference in color, they noted varying sizes of flowers and textures of leaves to help them with identification.
|
|
Mrs. Brezonick’s third graders learned about plants that were blooming now in our school prairie. They were especially excited to watch a bee bite the tip off of a bottle gentian, push its way inside to find nectar, and then emerge to search for another flower. How amazing! They also observed other insects feasting on asters and goldenrods.
|

Mrs. Roznowski’s kindergarteners had fun exploring the prairie while collecting seeds! They especially enjoyed breaking apart pods and comparing seed sizes. They planted their harvest at the top of the hill and are looking forward to seeing next year’s new plants.

Mrs. Klapperich’s kindergarteners looked for dry seed heads and pods in our school prairie. They collected several samples and planted them at the top of the hill. They are anxious to see new growth next spring!

Mrs. Rocco’s first graders learned about goldenrods and asters in our school prairie. Then they went “shopping” for seeds to which mulch was added. They used gardening tools to scrape the ground before spreading their harvest.

Mrs. Becker’s class learned about insects and then searched for them on our school prairie. Students swept with nets or used containers to capture their specimens. Then they used hand lenses to observe them closely. What fun in the sun!

Mrs. Siegman’s kindergarteners used nets and collecting jars to search for insects yesterday on our school prairie. What fun was had when these tiny creatures could be observed up close!

Mrs. Bauter’s class learned about insects yesterday. They used nets and jars to capture beetles, grasshoppers, and even a walking stick! What fun we all had in our school prairie!

Mrs. Blank’s class did a great job helping to plant several different kinds of prairie plants. They also worked as a team to put carpet anchored with rocks over next year’s planting beds so the soil will be bare and ready to plant next September. In addition they learned about the special plants in the prairie that wait until fall to bloom.

Mrs. Siem’s second graders collected seeds from a variety of plants in our school prairie. Then they used clawed trowels to prepare the soil in which to spread their harvest. What a beautiful day!

Ms. Parish’s class searched for insects on our school prairie. They learned how to use sweeping nets and jars to capture and observe these fascinating creatures!
|

This week Mrs. Dummer’s fourth graders used their observation skills to identify six different types of prairie grasses growing in our outdoor classroom. They also learned about the ways plants are adapted to survive in the dry conditions in prairies.

This week Mrs. Doro’s fourth graders learned about all the ways plants are adapted to living in the dry conditions of a prairie. They explored outside to find examples of six different types of prairie grasses. They found that telling grasses apart is easy when you know the differences in the seed stalks.

Task was to program the robot to drive forward to an object and stop a certain amount of centimeters away from the object (in this case, 5 cm).
We are just getting into using different sensors and programming the robots to complete basic tasks.
They are really enjoying this!

The Cross Country season is winding down for the year. The final meet will be held at Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School on Wednesday.

Charles (Charlie) Joseph Fedel was born at 3:59 a.m. on September 24th. He weighed 7 pounds, 4 ounces and was 19 inches long. Congratulations to Mrs. Fedel and her husband, and Charlie's new big brother! All are doing well!
In Ms. Fedel's absence, Ms. Osterhaus will teach sixth grade science. Ms. Osterhaus started the year with Ms. Fedel so that students would get to know her prior to her leave of absence. Welcome Ms. Osterhaus!

Thank you to everyone who completed the survey. Parents from each grade level were randomly selected to serve on the 2018/19 PSB and have been notified via email.
The Parent Sounding Board is a group of caring parents who meet regularly with administration with the purpose of providing input and feedback regarding district initiatives, learning about information impacting the district, and identifying areas of potential topics of interest. These meetings are open to any parents in the district, however parent representatives for each grade level have been selected to be present at each meeting based on completed surveys. The location of these meetings may rotate. Times have been tentatively set for 6:00 - 7:30 p.m., however may be updated based on the consensus of PSB members.

Each year, our district holds an annual meeting. At this meeting, all residents of voting age within the HHASD boundaries are eligible to both participate in, and vote on each of the resolutions presented at the meeting.

As such, we will be monitoring the Open Rate and Click Rate of the district newsletter, and will also discuss necessity at one of the early Parent Sounding Board meetings, to determine if all three are needed and/or desired. This form should be completed for EACH child. In order for GO Riteway to to maximize route efficiency, we need to know which eligible students plan to ride the bus. Click above for a project update for the WisDOT project on WIS 164 in Washington County. The department will close WIS 164 between Pioneer Rd. and County E for excavation and grading operations. WIS 164 will remain closed for up to 30 days to complete this work. Access to properties within the closed portion of WIS 164 will be maintained.
