Longtime Croton resident Sam “Sammy” Colombo was awarded a Key to the Village for his extraordinary contributions to the community. Sammy is one of Croton’s most dedicated volunteers, and has contributed countless hours to the Croton Senior Club, the Croton Caring Committee, and the Harry Chapin Memorial Run Against Hunger. Over the span of 25 years, Sammy has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the Harry Chapin Run Against Hunger, an annual race whose proceeds provide food to children and adults in need, locally, across the U.S. and around the world. Many Crotonites know Sammy for his hand drawn pictures, which he mails to everyone who assists him in his fundraising efforts.
We thank Sammy for his exemplary service to our community!

I hope that this newsletter finds you enjoying a brief respite from the wet weather that seemed to never end in September! A thank you to our Department of Public Works crews, Police Department, and Fire Department who dealt with numerous calls for service during Tropical Storm Ophelia and the heavy rains on September 29th. Please read on for a few updates related to projects taking place within the Village.
The Village Engineer has issued the building permit for the multi-family building at 25 South Riverside Avenue. Residents in the area can expect that construction will be taking place during the day over the next several months. There will also be pile driving during the next month as steel girders are put into place. The construction company has installed vibration monitoring devices near the site and these reports are available for review on the project page on the Village website. If specific concerns arise during the construction period, please contact the Village Engineer's office at 914-271-4783.
The Village Board has issued a special permit for the construction of a mixed-use 3-story building to be located at 352 South Riverside Avenue. The current proposal is for a total of five apartments and one storefront to be constructed. The application is now before the Planning Board for site plan review. Much documentation regarding the proposed building can be found on the project page on the Village website.
Finally, there will be a total of eight streets repaved in the Village this fall: Eklof Court, Hessian Hills Road, Hixson Road, Loconto Street, Michaels Lane, Oneida Avenue, Palmer Avenue and Piney Point Avenue. Once specific dates for the repaving are known, an email blast will be sent to the community. Please note that streets currently being worked on by Con Edison and/or its contractors are not included in the Village’s resurfacing program. These streets will be repaved by Con Edison’s paving contractor once their gas main work is completed.

Seasonal Kayak/Canoe Racks
With the 2023 boating season coming to a close, this is a reminder that all kayaks/canoes along with locks and chains must be removed from the Echo Canoe Launch and Croton Landing racks by Wednesday, November 1, 2023. Any boats left in the racks after that date will be removed and the owner will be responsible for any costs incurred by the Village. Croton Recreation offers winter storage for kayaks/ canoes from November 1, 2023 to April 1, 2024. For more info, call 914-271-3006.

Early Voting Information
Westchester County registered voters are eligible to cast an early voting ballot. Registered voters will be able to cast their ballot at ANY of the twenty-four (24) designated early voting locations, which includes the Stanley H. Kellerhouse Municipal Building at 1 Van Wyck Street.

New Sidewalk on South Riverside Avenue Unveiled
The Village of Croton-on-Hudson recently unveiled a brand new sidewalk segment and crosswalk on South Riverside Avenue, removing pedestrian access barriers and improving walkability for connections to the Croton Point Avenue Commercial District, the Croton ShopRite Plaza, and Van Cortlandt Manor, right in time for the 19th Annual Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze event. This project would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of the Department of Public Works under the direction of General Foreman Scott Marsh, who completed the majority of the work in-house, resulting in significant cost savings for the Village.

The renovation of the Community Room kitchen at the Stanley H. Kellerhouse Municipal Building is in full swing. The project is being done in-house by DPW and is expected to be completed by the end of October. | |
DPW has been hard at work installing brand new, custom wayfinding signs across the Village, with the newest editions for Kaplan's Pond and the Jane E. Lytle Memorial Arboretum. | |

DPW will vacuum leaves from November through December. Only loose leaves left at curbside will be picked up - bagged leaves will NOT be picked up. Please keep leaf piles out of the roadway (see photo to the left). Please do not park on or near leaf piles. Twigs, branches and other yard debris should not be mixed in with the loose leaves. Yard waste, such as small twigs, clippings, flowers, etc. (not including loose leaves) will continue to be picked up through October on the collection schedule. Yard waste should be in bio-degradable bags or in open-top garbage cans. As always, the Village recommends that residents mulch their leaves on their property. | |

Croton Business Council Oktoberfest

The object of this event is to find all the locations on the list of clues. Interfaith Discussion on Anti-Semitism

Ed Ginsberg will lead a workshop on antisemitism for the Temple Israel and broader interfaith communities. Join neighbors from the Our Savior Lutheran Church, Asbury United Methodist Church, Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Hudson Valley, and the St. Augustine Episcopal Church for an interfaith discussion on the nature of anti-semitism and what we can do as a community to combat it. A light supper will be served.

Police Advisory Committee and Police Department to Host Community Town Hall in October
The Village of Croton-on-Hudson Police Advisory Committee and Croton Police Department will host a Town Hall for the community on Tuesday, October 17th, 2023 at 6:00 PM. The Town Hall is an opportunity for residents to learn about the results of the 2023 Community Survey on Public Safety and Law Enforcement, a report from the Police Advisory Committee, as well as a presentation from the Croton Police Department. Questions and input from residents will be welcomed at the end of the meeting. The meeting will be held in the Georgianna Grant Meeting Room of the Municipal Building at 1 Van Wyck Street. Residents are invited to attend in person, or you can view the Town Hall meeting on Cable Channel 78, as well as on the Village’s website. Questions can be emailed by October 13th to crotonpoliceadvisorycommittee@gmail.com.

Conservation Corner
A Monthly Column written by the Croton Conservation Advisory Council
Here in Croton, we are fortunate to live in a community rich in trees. However, that leads to the question: What to do with all those leaves in Autumn? In a previous article, we discussed Leave Leaves Alone, a more sustainable way of managing leaves on lawns by mulching. This month, our focus is on composting. Composting is the most practical and convenient way to handle your yard waste. Composting leaves creates a nutrient soil-like organic matter that enriches the soil, and can be used for gardens, lawns, trees, shrubs, or even planter boxes. The Cornell Cooperative Extension Compost Resources Page is a great place to learn about the basics of composting and how to start your own compost at home.
The Croton Conservation Advisory Council meets the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30 PM in the small meeting room in the Municipal Building. All meetings are open to the public.
