LGBTQ+ History Month, Office Updates, Pumpkins for Pigs, and more! |
Dear Baltimore Office of Sustainability Friends,
This month we celebrate Walktober, Energy Awareness Month, LGBTQ+ History Month, and pumpkin season! Walktober highlights beautiful trails across Maryland, encouraging more walking while stressing the need for enhanced pedestrian safety. To celebrate Walktober in Baltimore, check out the Gwynns Falls, Jones Falls, and Stoney Run trails, or any of the 30 miles of trails across the city. Also, consider attending a Walkinar hosted by the Maryland Department of Transportation. Energy Awareness Month draws attention to the need to maximize energy & cost savings and weatherize/winterize homes as temperatures drop this fall and winter. Check out this Energy Awareness Month Toolkit to learn more about what you can do to increase awareness and prepare your home for winter.
LGBTQ+ History Month is a time to acknowledge, honor, and celebrate past and present LGBTQ+ community members across the region. Trans Maryland is a trans-led community power-building organization dedicated to Maryland’s trans community connecting trans men, women, and those who are nonbinary or gender non-conforming to critical services including support with name changes and gender-affirming care. Baltimore Blaq Pride is also recognized across Baltimore during October, promoting a series of events addressing issues in LGBTQ communities, from stigma to fostering self-affirming environments and navigating Black, non-binary identities. Learn more here.
Keep reading to learn about some amazing fall events, pumpkin waste-reduction strategies, job opportunities, and more!

Just Released -- Harbor Heartbeat 2022 Report Card |
Each year, the Harbor Heartbeat Report tracks water quality improvements by taking the "pulse" of the City’s streams and Harbor. The water quality data used within the recently released Harbor Heartbeat 2022 Report was gathered by Blue Water Baltimore in 2021 and analyzed by the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore’s Healthy Harbor Initiative.
They are happy to report that the 2022 assessment provides a good indication that water quality in the Baltimore Harbor continues to improve! For instance, during the reporting period, the Baltimore City Department of Public Works reported a 64% reduction in sewer overflows by volume. Regarding bacteria levels, 80% of sampling sites show improvement or consistently high scores. And Mr. Trash Wheel continues to be a champion of trash-free waters, collecting 2,119 tons of floating debris from the Jones Falls from 2014 to 2022. Check it out to learn more!

Pumpkins for Pigs and Wildlife! | Every Halloween, roughly 1 billion pounds of pumpkins are tossed. Make a change and ensure that yours does not go to the landfill! The internet is full of ideas for how to handle these fall leftovers. If your pumpkin hasn't started to rot, you could donate it to a local farm or animal sanctuary for the animals to enjoy. Whispering Rise Animal Sanctuary, which participates in Pumpkins for Pigs, is a bit of a drive from Baltimore but offers a tour to visit with their pigs in addition to pumpkin drop-offs! Seeds from inside the pumpkin can also be collected and allowed to dry for a day or two before being left out for birds and wildlife to enjoy. Any scraps or pumpkins that have started to rot can be composted as organic material breaks down most efficiently outside of landfills. You might even get some pumpkins next summer from a stray seed that decides to germinate! And remember, most pumpkins are edible. For more ideas on sustainable ways to dispose of your pumpkin, visit this site. | | |
