A Special Halloween Train Ride

On Saturday, October 28, Kids ON TRACK kicks off Halloween with the Track or Treat special train ride between Springfield and Hartford.

The Track or Treat special will leave Springfield at 10:00 am. In Hartford, passengers will change to a second CTrail train coming from New Haven for the ride back to Springfield, arriving at 11:40 am.

Passengers must be in the Springfield Union Station main concourse by 9:30 am for check-in.

Passengers (of all ages) are encouraged to wear costumes. Maggie the Railroad Clown will be on the train creating smiles with her juggling, magic tricks, and balloon artistry. And, there will be lots of nice Halloween treats in Springfield Union Station to greet the returning riders.

Tickets for the roundtrip train ride are $5.00 per person, although children 2 and under ride free. Tickets can be purchased in the main concourse of Springfield Union Station on the morning of the train ride, or in advance by clicking here.

The Track or Treat webpage is here.

Two Significant Dates in October

There are two significant dates coming up in October.

The first is October 28 when we do the next installment of the Kids ON TRACK program - Track or Treat - the pre-Halloween train ride we are co-sponsoring with CTrail and Springfield Union Station. And, the event is significant for several reasons.

Kids ON TRACK started out as a program to get kids involved in model railroading. But, as we saw with the July train rides, kids love to ride real trains, too. Amherst is somewhat unique in that we are a society that covers all the railroad hobbies. Not just modeling, or photography, or historical preservation. We are all things railroad, and giving kids the opportunity to ride trains is as important to us as teaching kids how to model trains.

Also, Track or Treat is another step in growing our partnership with CTrail and Union Station. We see all kinds of potential with this collaborative, and, quite honestly, we hope other railroad and model railroad organizations will join us in developing the Kids ON TRACK program.

And, an invitation - come ride the train with us on October 28. Seriously, come ride the train - just for fun. Everybody. Doesn’t make any difference how old you are. Dig up a fun costume, and come ride the train. What the hey, I’m riding, and I’m going to be in costume. It will be fun.

Next - October 29 - the day after Track or Treat - we are sponsoring a new train show in Vernon, Connecticut. And, what’s significant here is that this is the first time we have ever taught another organization how to run a train show. We have all this experience managing the Railroad Hobby Show - the largest railroad-themed trade show in America - and in Vernon we are using that experience to help another organization learn how to manage a train show.

Honestly, it’s a good feeling to be able to share our expertise.

Anyway, if you are in the Vernon area on October 29, stop by. It will be a fun show.

Thanks everybody.

ABEL @ Syracuse - November 4 & 5

On November 4 & 5, 2023, the Amherst Belt Lines will have a large modular model railroad running at the Great New York State Model Train Show in Syracuse, New York.

This is the oldest and largest model train show in New York with 25 operating model railroads and 300 exhibitors. And, the Amherst Belt Lines is one of the key attractions for the event.

The Great New York State Model Train Show is sponsored by the National Railroad Historical Society, and is held on the New York State Fairgrounds.

Show details here.

Vernon Model Train Show - October 29, 2023

The Amherst Railway Society is adding another train show - this one in Vernon, Connecticut on October 29, 2023.

The one-day show will feature operating model railroads and exhibitors selling model railroad equipment.

The show webpage is here.

Amherst at the BIG E Agricultural Fair

The Amherst Railway Society (ARS) was an exhibitor at the BIG E Agricultural Fair again this year. And, we do this for several reasons.

First, to promote the Railroad Hobby Show in January. We are the largest railroad-themed trade show in America, the second largest show at Eastern States, and there are still people that don't know about us.

Exhibiting is a good way to tell the Railroad Hobby Show story to a large audience.

Second, we exhibit to promote membership in the Amherst Railway Society. ARS is somewhat unique in that we cover all the railroad hobbies, and there is a place for all railroad interests at Amherst.

Our exhibit tells that story.

2024 Railroad Hobby Show

January 27 & 28, 2024

Once again, the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) will be holding their Winter Board Meeting on January 26, 2024, in conjunction with the Railroad Hobby Show. NMRA board members and staff from Australia, Canada, Europe, and the US will be in attendance.

Advance ticket sales for the 2024 Railroad Hobby Show are now available here.
