Ask the Family Educator
by Maia Lewis,
Early Childhood Coordinator
Back to school time is so busy and comes with lots of opportunities for kids to join sports and activities, but our schedule feels packed!
How many of these adult led activities are “too many”?
The transition back to school also opens up many opportunities for new experiences for children, often after school is over for the day. There may be a new sport to try, dance classes to attend, music lessons to participate in etc. All of these are wonderful ways for growing children to find something they are passionate about and acquire all the skills that come along with specific goal group activities. It’s easy and understandable to want to add on a multitude of experiences for your child. But it’s important to reflect on how balanced young children’s time is when it comes to adult led vs unstructured play. Balancing the benefits of these activities with the stress and hustle of time that can come with overscheduling is key.
The American Psychological Association defines unstructured play as play that isn’t organized or directed by adults or older peers and that generally doesn’t have a defined purpose or outcome— and is a fundamental necessity for children to thrive physically, emotionally, mentally, and socially. This type of play allows children to be independent, creative, and build confidence. When adults are passive participants in play, it allows children to take the lead to foster decision-making skills and it encourages self-discovery. This time allows for children to explore and create without the pressure to produce a specific result.
There is no specific answer to the question, ‘how scheduled is too scheduled?’, instead it is important to reflect on how your child’s list of afterschool activities impacts them as an individual and how it impacts your family as a whole. If the pressures of shuffling from one adult led activity to another causes stress and leaves very little time for your child to lead their own play, it may be time to intentionally balance it out with room for unstructured play. Each child and each family will be different, and you know your child best.

Home Electrification Appliance Rebate (HEAR)
Home Electrification Appliance Rebate (HEAR) funding through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) recently expanded the incentives that income eligible Long Islanders can currently receive through the EmPower+ program and local utility programs to make their homes more comfortable and energy efficient. This new federal funding means that low-income households could be eligible for up to $40,000* in FREE home weatherization projects and heat pump installations, and moderate-income households are eligible for approximately $25,000* through applicable programs for the same projects. Refer to the eligibility table to the right to understand the amount your household could be eligible for through state programs.
This funding is applied toward the cost of energy efficiency improvements, including air sealing, insulation, heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, and electrical service and wiring upgrades. Qualified, participating contractors will help determine necessary improvements and what households are eligible for during the home energy assessment prior to starting any project.
Rebates and incentives are available while funding lasts so please sign up today! Go ahead and start your Empower+ application NOW or contact us at the Long Island Clean Energy Hub at LICleanEnergy@cornell.edu or

CCE Suffolk Board of Directors Highlight
Andrew Lynch
Andrew Lynch is a transportation executive and current Vice President with Hampton Jitney, where he has worked for over 15 years. A dynamic, family-owned business, Hampton Jitney is one of the most readily identified brands on the East End and its iconic service has been running daily for over 45 years.
A recent Newsday article from John Hanc highlighted Hampton Jitney on its 50th year in operation. The Hampton Jitney, established in 1974 by Jim Davidson, began as a small shuttle service with an eight-person van helping East End residents travel between towns. Amid the 1970s gas crisis, Davidson’s idea evolved to meet the transportation needs of the Hamptons, growing into a multi-million-dollar operation, recognized across New York and beyond.
In 1988, Andrew's family—led by J. Brent and Missy Lynch—acquired Hampton Jitney, ensuring the continued growth of this iconic service. Today, under the leadership of Andrew's brother, Geoffrey Lynch, the company operates a fleet of 55 buses, covering millions of miles each year. As executive vice president, Andrew contributes to this legacy of reliability, providing critical transportation links between Manhattan and Long Island’s North and South Forks.
The Lynch family’s legacy—spanning tugboats, ferries, and now motor coaches—continues to define how New Yorkers experience summer in the Hamptons.
