September Business Matters
Thank you to Bethel University for speaking at our September Business Matters! They spoke about the importance of higher education and how Bethel University can help people reach their educational and professional goals . We also appreciate Bethel University for being our sponsor for this event! We had a wonderful crowd and enjoyed the open discussion about this topic.

Make sure to join us on October 16th for our next Business Matters! We can't wait to hear from Andrew Jackson and Scott Becton from Baptist Memorial Hospital.
The Land Trust for Tennessee Survey
"The Land Trust for Tennessee, a statewide land conservation organization, has protected and conserved almost 125,000 acres in the Volunteer State. From farmland and wildlife habitat to public parks, scenic vistas, historic properties, and more, we work with people to make sure Tennessee’s most important places aren’t lost forever to development.

As we enter our 20th year, we’re conducting a statewide conservation plan to help guide our future work. Objective mapping data is a big part of this process, but we’re also seeking public input. We want to know what types of land people most want to see conserved. This information will be weighted heavily in our plan. Considering your role in Obion County, I’m reaching out to see if you all would be willing to complete our short survey (it only takes about 5 minutes). As we think about the future of Tennessee, it’s crucial for us to hear what our community leaders – people like you -- think across the state. We’re also really wanting to hear from people across the state, and we’re short on responses in West Tennessee at the moment."

The survey can be found at this link: here
McMathus involved in WestTeach
In just two sessions in WestTeach, Beth McManus has already learned plenty.

Day-long programs focusing on West Tennessee agriculture and area entrepreneurship in the pilot year of the WestStar-created program have truly been enlightening for the Union City High School Spanish teacher.

She’s also had it verified how fortunate she and the remainder of the UC School System teachers are.

“One of the first things they asked us was what were the major issues at our school,” said McManus, who was chosen from a list of 31 applicants along with 13 other West Tennessee teachers (12 accepted) to participate in the development program. “And, as a system, I honestly couldn’t think of one. ...Read More here
Baptist Memorial Hospital News
Baptist Union City Now Offers 3-D Mammography
Union City, Tenn., September 17, 2018

Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City (BMH-UC) is now offering a new technology that could improve early detection of breast cancer. Digital breast tomosynthesis, also known as 3-D mammography, allows a radiologist to look for abnormalities in more areas than the 2-D mammography. 3-D mammography is especially beneficial to patients with dense breast tissue, a family history of breast cancer or women who are regularly called back for additional tests.

The new technology does not increase the amount of time it takes to screen women, and there is no additional discomfort. “Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City takes a proactive and comprehensive approach to breast health services. Our new breast imaging system is one of the most exciting recent advancements in breast cancer detection. 3-D mammography is a revolutionary screening tool in the fight against breast cancer,” said Skipper Bondurant, BMH-UC administrator and CEO.

New Location for Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation
Baptist Memorial Hospital-

Union City registered nurses (left to right) Crystal Broyles and Nikki Callins stand in front of the entrance to the new location for cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. The department is now located on the first floor at the west entrance of the hospital. The area is more spacious, convenient, accommodating, and comfortable for patients. This move was prompted due to continued growth and new initiatives related to education requiring computer stations and interactive classes. The first day of exercise in the new area was Monday, September 17.

Jacob Virgin Merit Scholar Semifinalist
Jacob Virgin is on the short list for academic greatness.

The Union City High School senior has put himself in the category of distinguished students across the nation, named today as a National Merit Scholar semifinalist.

Virgin is believed to be the first UCHS student to achieve that elite status in more than 20 years. Four Tornado graduates earned “commended” status since 1997, that designation essentially an honorable mention standing in the superlative category.

More than 1.6 million students across the country took the PSAT/NWSQT (Preliminary, Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholar Qualifying Test). Virgin’s score was in the top 1 percent of that group.

The roughly 16,000 semifinalists will find out in February if they are finalists for the honor and significant scholarship money. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

“It’s really a great honor. I’m happy,” the humble Virgin said. “I think it’s finally starting to sink in.. ...Read More here
