This Month's Book Display:
Books in Translation
|
Did you know that only 3% of books published in the United States every year are books originally written in another language? That's unfortunate since translated literature is one of the best ways to learn about and exchange ideas with other cultures.
This month the library is displaying books in our collection that are translated from another language. The collection includes classics as well as contemporary titles, from all over the globe.
Push your boundaries and try reading translated literature today!

October is Health Literacy Month! Health literacy measures how proficiently one is able to access and understand pertinent health information. Public, school, academic, and special libraries play a key role in making quality health information accessible to all.
Access to trustworthy information leads to better health outcomes. Numerous studies indicate that individuals with high health literacy are more likely to use preventative care, be immunized against contagious diseases, and are less likely to be hospitalized. Libraries help by providing access to quality health information for library users of all ages.
Below are a few of the quality consumer-level health information databases offered by our library and available to everyone inside the RHEC building:
-
Consumer Health Complete - Provides convenient access to easily understandable health and medical information. Consumers can search and browse within medical encyclopedias, popular reference books, and magazine articles.
-
Health Source - Consumer Edition - Information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine, and general health.
-
AHFS Consumer Medication Information - A trusted source and recognized standard for patient drug information, available in both English and Spanish. AHFS includes more than a thousand drug information monographs written in lay language for consumers.
-
Coronavirus Research Database - Including coverage of the COVID-19 outbreak, this database curates openly available content related to coronaviruses. It includes thousands of open-access articles from the world’s leading publishers as well as current research from pre-print repositories such as arXiv and will continue to grow and evolve as more is learned about the pandemic.
So next time you have a health-related question and want to do your own research (please still always consult your doctor!), make sure you refer to trusted, reliable resources like the ones listed above. Not Facebook. And not celebrities.

This bestseller from Roanoke's own Beth Macy chronicles Appalachia's decades-long struggle with opioid addiction. What's revealed is an epidemic fueled by greed, neglect, and desperation. Macy weaves a narrative that connects readers with the human face of this tragedy, exploring every facet of the crisis with compassion and, ultimately, hope.
