Mayor Message
State of the City
During the current campaign season for the elections, I have learned of several misrepresentations being put forth concerning the state of the City, which I wish to correct.

During the past 8 years we have not raised any taxes in Orem with the exception of a $1 dollar per month property tax increase to hire four additional police officers, which was approved by the voters of the city. We have raised water, storm water, and sewer fees to meet infrastructure requirements as needed.

But this past August the city actually lowered the city's water fees by 15%. Last year in 2020 the city lowered the street lighting fees by 27%. During the last 8 years we have balanced our budget each year, while at the same time producing a $4 Million dollar annual reserve fund increase which has gone into our Capital Investment Fund for future projects.

The city has purchased 40 new police cars @ $50,000.00 each, 3 new fire engines @ $850,000.00 each, and 2 new ambulances @ $750,000.00. At the same time we have purchased new bullet proof vests and new body cameras for our police force.

Also we have built 6 new parks and have replaced many of the existing parks playground equipment. And we have built a new dry side Recreation Center and a new 500 seat Library Hall.
Lastly it should be noted that our sales tax revenues have gone up by over 40% due to the strong economy of Orem.

Please note that the Milken Institute in February of this year ranked the Provo-Orem Metro area as the No. #1 Best Economic Performance metro area of the United States.

Several years ago we started to lose police officers and firefighters because our wages were not competitive. Two years ago we worked hard to put into place a new hybrid step and grade compensation program for our first responders.

It was very costly to do so, but we funded it internally without any tax increases to our residents to do so. And in the process we now are fully staffed, have officers coming over to Orem on lateral moves from other cities, and have multiple applicants for any opening that does come up.

The morale of the departments are at all time highs. Also it is important to note that several years ago Orem was listed as the 17th safest city in the nation and recently moved up in the rankings to number #2.

Please note that in August of this year Safewise Institute ranked the Provo-Orem metro area as the No.#2 Safest Metro Area in the United States.

Fall in Orem - Jeff Lambson
I absolutely love this Autumn time of year!

The pleasant temperatures, the change in direction of the sunlight on the mountains, the beautiful, vibrant change of colors in the leaves, are all pleasant and welcome changes in the season. It has been said that the one constant in life is change. A change in life can be exciting, difficult, scary or even painful.

Thomas Edison was once asked how he dealt with the 14,000 failures he had before he invented the lightbulb. Edison responded, “I didn’t fail 14,000 times. I learned 14,000 ways how not to invent the lightbulb.”
I admire this positive way of seeing the challenges that laid before him and realizing 14,000 times that something needed to be changed.

Change can be good and help us to grow. One change we can make is a change of attitude. A positive attitude can make all the difference for the future. And, an attitude of gratitude allows us to see how blessed we truly are to be able to have change and improvements in our life.

Residents Serve in Honor of 9/1
Hundreds of residents of Orem spent the morning of September 11th providing service throughout the community in honor and memory of the sad day 20 years ago.

Residents helped spruce up the Orem Cemetery, cleaned up along Utah Lake and around a city basin, collected snacks and food for local school food banks, donated items to and painted barrels for the Community Action Services and Food Bank, painted a fence at the Orem Community Hospital Community Garden, put together items for refugees, beautified the SCERA, revitalized resident homes and properties, and so much more.

Thank you to all those that participated and for making a difference in your Orem community!
