October Edition

A Message from the Mayor

Fall has been a productive season so far. With council meetings back in session, there has been much on the go. My Annual Charity Golf Classic took place in September, and it was a fantastic day spent with more than 150 golfers who gathered to support the Spirit of Generosity, an initiative that is inspiring positive change in Vaughan and beyond.

As we look ahead at November, we have much to look forward to. We will be hosting our second annual Diwali Celebration at Vaughan City Hall. The celebration is on Monday, November 4 at 6:00pm. All are welcomed and we look forward to celebrating with you!

You are also invited to attend a Remembrance Day service on Monday, November 11 at 10:30 a.m. at the Woodbridge Cenotaph (80 Wallace St.). Refreshments will be provided at the Woodbridge Memorial Pool and Arena (5020 Hwy 7) following the service.

I hope to see you there.

IN THE NEWS

We marked another significant milestone in our collective commitment to public safety with the grand opening of York Regional Police's new substation in the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.

This permanent fixture in our growing community serves as a reminder that safety is our priority - we must keep dangerous criminals off our streets and in jail where they belong.

I want to thank YRP for their continued dedication to protecting everyone who lives, works and visits Vaughan.

Community safety is a top priority, and we're making real progress in tackling auto theft. Thanks to $900,000 in provincial funding and initiatives like AutoGuard 1.0, which led to over 50 arrests, we've seen a 31% decrease in auto theft from last year. While this is a positive step, there's still more to do.

AutoGuard 1.0 was a success, and this fall, York Regional Police will launch Operation AutoGuard 2.0 to further combat auto theft. This new phase will focus on two key areas: crime prevention education and strategic enforcement.

Vaughan has my word that I will do everything I can, including advocating for more funding for York Regional Police, to keep our city safe.

The City of Vaughan is extending Bass Pro Mills Drive from Highway 400 to Weston Road, as outlined in the recently completed Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Study. The City is now in the detailed design phase.

The preferred design is a straight extension of Bass Pro Mills Drive, with a new 30-metre road that accommodates two lanes of traffic in each direction. It also includes a separated sidewalk and cycling path, a boulevard on both sides of the roadway, streetlighting, streetscaping features and more. The existing Highway 400 bridge will also be modified as part of the project. Construction is expected to start July 2026 and be completed by 2028. For more information, please click here.

RECAP FROM SEPTEMBER

I was pleased to join so many Vaughan residents and business owners for the Mayor Steven Del Duca’s 2024 Annual Charity Golf Classic. I want to thank Brian Bentz, President and CEO of Alectra, for his integral role as Chair of this event and for his continued support to ensure it remains an ongoing success. Our city is one where individuals give generously of their time and talent, allowing events such as this to thrive and make a meaningful difference in our community. I am honoured to continue the legacy of this important initiative, and I am beyond grateful for the support of local leaders and organizations, including event sponsor City Park Group, for their commitment to giving back.

Thank you to everyone who came out to kick off Culture Days at the Vaughan Food and Culture Festival! The event recognized and celebrated arts, culture and heritage. Festivities included greetings, food trucks and vendors, a flag-raising ceremony, entertainment – including music and dance performances, arts and cultural workshops – and so much more.
