We are so excited! Fall not only brings beautiful colours but it also means that Summer Camp Registration for summer 2023 is opening soon. So, get ready!
Remember to mark your calendars, as spaces fill up very quickly! More information will be available through our website. Keep an eye out for a letter emailed out to returning Summer Camp families announcing the opening of registration.

Summer 2023 is going to be an incredible summer! We’ve tweaked our sessions to respond to your requests. We’ve added more one-week sessions to the summer camp roster, for those who want to try a camp for the first time.

And as always, we’ll continue to offer our classic 2-week sessions, as well as Day Camp, Kinder Camp, and our popular three-night nature session (Session N).
And, of course, there are our acclaimed Leadership programs! On that note, a reminder to all Leadership applicants, that applications are due on Wednesday, October 26th at 6:00 p.m.

Whichever session is right for you and your camper, we're looking forward to welcoming all our campers to CK for another unforgettable summer filled with memories, lasting friendships, and those irreplaceable WOW moments! Summer Camp 2023 here we come!

The Ontario Trillium Foundation Kept Us Afloat!
We have written in this newsletter before about the impacts of COVID-19. Like every business we were shut down, then opened partially, then opened with some precautions in place. The last three years have been such a challenge, not the least of which is financially. As a not-for-profit charity we, like many others, will spend years trying to recover.

Camp Kawartha received incredible financial support during this past year because of a generous grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation’s Community Building Fund!

They stepped in to help with our staffing costs, the development of on-line resources, and to offset ongoing expenses such as utilities and purchasing PPE equipment to keep both our staff and visitors safe! It was a major boost during a tenuous, even threating situation. We would have been hard pressed to continue to offer our award-winning programming without this assistance.

We’d like to take this opportunity to formally thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their critical and much-needed support.
Morton Healing Garden
Thanks to a very generous donation from the Morton Family, we are creating a beautiful interactive garden in and round our Health Centre. The garden will promote nature connection, mindfulness, and well-being by encouraging children to engage with nature. The garden features a lovely water feature with small stream tumbling over rocks and whimsical benches carved from logs.
Other features will include:
·        A Zen Garden – providing opportunities for kids to express themselves through creative designs
·        A Sensory Garden – by including plants with beautiful, smells, textures, and colour
·        A Critter Friendly Garden – with native shrubs such as Nannyberry, Serviceberry, Honeysuckle, Ninebark to attract birds. We will also be installing bird houses, bee houses, bat, butterfly and toad houses, salamander boards, bird feeders and more, all the in hopes of attracting more wildlife.
·        Pollinator Garden – to attract butterflies and moths – especially the endangered monarch butterfly.
·        Gnome Homes and Fairy Gardens – To activate a child’s imagination, we’ll have colourful shells, stones, boughs, and bark so that kids can make their own creations out of natural materials to attract the elusive fairies and gnomes living around Camp Kawartha.

We will announce the official opening of the Morton Healing Garden with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in early June 2023. Stay tuned!
The Voyageur Canoe Fleet Grows!
A beautiful Voyageur canoe (26 feet in length) complete with paddles, has been donated to Camp Kawartha. Katie and Jim Stewart kindly gifted their family canoe to the Camp, and we could not be more delighted!

This will be a welcome addition for our Adventure in Understanding program in partnership with the Rotary Club of Peterborough/Kawartha. These boats are broad and stable, helping inexperienced paddlers learn to canoe. With this wonderful donation, we now have a fleet of 3 Voyageur canoes!

We thank Katie and Jim for their thoughtfulness and generosity!
We are Co-Hosting a Scavenger Hunt Related to Our Anniversary!
Who doesn’t enjoy a scavenger hunt! It’s like solving a mystery or looking for lost treasure, and it challenges the searcher to be curious, to problem-solve, and be creative in their search – ‘where can I find the answers’!

The Peterborough Museum & Archives is joining us in offering a Scavenger Hunt which asks searchers to find answers to some very specific questions! For those daring enough to search, there are great prize-packs to be won!
Here are the questions related to the Camp and the Museum that you must answer:
1.     Name the only woman who gave birth at Camp Kawartha. (Hint…you can find the answer in our exhibition at the Museum!)
2.     Name our current Summer Camp Director.
3.     How long has the Camp’s Summer Camp program been running – 90 years; 100 years; 110 years?
4.     What is the title of the Camp Kawartha exhibition at the Peterborough Museum & Archives?
5.     What is the theme of the exhibition after Camp Kawartha’s is done?
6.     Does the Museum have a summer camp program?
There are two prize packs totaling $200 for those with the most correct answers. Submit your list of answers to Susan ([email protected]) by December 4th (the final day of our exhibition at the Museum!) by 5:00 p.m. The winners will be announced in our December newsletter. If more than one person or family gets all the questions correctly answered, we will draw a name from the boss’ hat to decide the winners!
Now go look for those answers!!
Congratulations Dustin! WORLD CHAMPION

Congratulations Dustin! We are so proud of you!

NATURE NOTES
Nature Showcase: A Lesson in Leaving
A school group recently visited our main camp. They were a keen bunch (happy to be outside and out of the classroom I suppose), and all wonderfully behaved. It was a pleasure to have them here.

One of our programs had them studying habitats, and they were out on the Yellow Trail looking for and discussing what habitats existed in the woods. Our instructor had them tipping over rocks and logs, and many found red-backed salamanders as well as one amazing blue spotted beauty.

Unbeknownst to us and the teachers, one of the little salamanders travelled in a water bottle back to the school. The student was so intrigued by the salamander that they decided an amphibian companion would be great.
However, the hitchhiker was discovered and after some phone calls, was transported back to Camp Kawartha to be released in the same area she came from. Once free of her travel case, the salamander (we named her Toby) made her way through the leaf litter and scrambled under a nice, big rock in no time.
That group of students learned many things during their day-long visit, not the least of which is to leave animals, plants, insects where you find them. It is great to admire, even touch, but please do not take them home!

What a fantastic life lesson for this class…and for us all.
