Understanding Our Park User Survey
In 2016 and again in 2022, the Allegheny County Parks Foundation invested in park user surveys, thanks to generous funding by the Richard King Mellon Foundation, to learn more about how people interact with each of the nine county parks and the park system as a whole. The 2022 Park User Survey reveals some intriguing insights into park usage patterns, visitor preferences, and areas for potential improvement. In this blog post, we dive into some of the key findings of the survey and explore what they mean for your parks and for our work fundraising for and investing in park projects. Read all about it in our most recent blog post.

Playground Parking Area Project Announcement
We are contributing to the redesign of the children’s playground parking lot in South Park through a grant with the Alcoa Foundation, in partnership with Allegheny County, as per recommendations from our South Park Ecological Assessment and Action Plan. As part of the process 85 evergreen and flowering trees will line the updated parking lot for the restored playground. These trees will shade, intercept and absorb stormwater, provide habitat and offer comfortable gathering areas for visitors. Learn more about this new project and the benefits it will bring to South Park!

Project Update at Suffragist Grove
This past week we were busy at Suffragist Grove in Hartwood Acres Park planting 5,000 plugs. The groundcover plants were purchased thanks to a generous grant by the Laurel Foundation and will help to beautify the area for years to come. Species that were planted included Phlox stolonifera ‘Sherwood Purple’, Viola walteri ‘Silver Gem’, Sedges including Carex cherokeensis and Carex radiata, Geranium maculatum (wild geranium), Iris cristata ‘Tennessee White’, Onoclea sensibilis (sensitive fern), Polemonium reptans (Jacob’s ladder), Amsonia ‘Blue Ice’, Aster ericoides ‘Snow Flurry’ and Virginia Bluebells. We extend a huge thank you to everyone who worked together on this planting, especially to the Allegheny County Park Rangers and our volunteers!
