Wild Geese
Wild Geese

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
~Mary Oliver

Fall beckons not only with a riot of color but also with a new schedule of to-do's. No matter how many years one has been out of school, there is an  intensity  of autumn, a time of new beginnings, clean notebooks, sharpened pencils and the possibility of perfection.  But as October and November roll in, let's be honest,  self-judgement also rolls in...."this year was going to be different, I wasn't going to fall behind, I was going to do better...etc, etc. I was going to be PERFECT!"  Inevitably we fall short of our self-imposed expectations.

Mindfulness helps us lower the bar on perfection...with compassion. Like so many of Mary Oliver's poems,  Wild Geese  guides us and reminds us that mindfulness is always within reach if we remain curious and compassionate to self. This month I have started a new monthly series, Mind the Moment, which I hope will help you add short moments of mindfulness that will encourage you to cultivate curiosity and compassion. Find Mind the Moment tips on StressResources.com...very short videos (no glitzy  production, simply me talking to you) with fun, actionable activities for kids or adults that take no more than five minutes to complete. Check back each month for a new Mind the Moment tip. Join me?

Wishing you a month of minding the moments ,

Stress Resources' Bookshelf
In our recent meditation maintenance group we discussed the Japanese concept of "Ikigai", roughly translated as "reason for being" or "what brings joy to living". It is a concept that intersects one's vocation, passions, meaning making, talents etc into a core  raison d'ĂȘtre

I was interested to see this new book hit the bookshelves soon after our meditation group discussion. While I take issue with the subtitle "The Happiness of Always Being Busy" (I think I would rephrase this to be The Happiness of Having Purpose); I am looking forward to exploring the authors' take on this very mindful concept.
