The First Ever VIRTUAL VOS Opens in Just 133 Days!!

VIRTUAL VOS 2021 conference March 18-20_ 2021 Dear VOS Family,

By now you've cleaned up the office, dusted off the decorative pillows and stocked up the fridge and you're starting to wonder "when are my buddies coming over?" Wonder no more ... the VIRTUAL VOS gang will be joining you Thursday, March 18 - Saturday, March 20 (that is, IF you register). Just long enough to have a great time together, but not so long as to overstay our welcome!

Dr. Leesa Galatz
Dr. Leesa Galatz
Don't worry, VIRTUAL VOS 2021 will be chock-full of live, interactive content including your favorite events like the Jacques Jenny Lecture Series and the Mark Bloomberg Resident Research Awards, some friendly competition, fun games and more! Dr. Leesa Galatz, chair of the Orthopedics Department at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City, will share the current science and cutting edge techniques that she uses in her patients who suffer from shoulder and/or elbow disease and injury. Dr. Galatz's primary research interests are the basic science of rotator cuff disease and tendon healing as it pertains to cuff repair. She is co-PI on 2 major NIH-funded research projects on rotator cuff degeneration / repair and tissue engineering strategies for tendon repair.

In addition to the usual live Q & A that follows abstract and lecture presentations, VIRTUAL VOS conference registrants will be able to chat live with the presenters DURING the presentation. How often have you had a question during the middle of a scientific presentation, but forgot it by the presentation's end? Worry no more because the miracles of technology have you covered this year! In addition to all of this live, interactive content, registrants will have access to hours of additional scientific and exhibitor/sponsor content ON DEMAND. In addition to the ON DEMAND supplemental content, ALL of the live, interactive content will also be recorded and available afterward so that our international guests don't need to keep crazy hours to take advantage of all the cutting-edge scientific abstract presentations.

In addition to the our normal highly valued opportunities for sponsorship of scientific sessions, student and resident research award winners, our Jacques Jenny lecture series, etc., we're excited to be introducing a new "Our Members Want to Know" OnDemand mini-program in which our supporters will be invited to submit brief and targeted pre-recorded video responses to our moderators' provocative questions. Sponsors can opt to engage on one or more questions relevant to their product / service line; each video response with an associated submission fee. This is a great opportunity for our members to get answers to their questions and our industry supporters are given the opportunity to tout their products and services. Sounds pretty ideal, huh?

You're going to be pleasantly surprised at the low conference registration fees this year (see Registration Fees table at right). Coupled with the elimination of your personal travel expenses and the ease of attendance for our international members, we are expecting our registration numbers to RISE this year! Be sure to register before January 1, 2021 to take advantage of the discounted EARLY BIRD registration rate!

All of this planning did not happen in a vacuum. Please indulge me while I give a HUGE shout out to your VOS Board of Directors and to Dane Johnston, Sara McGee and John Cole of our NCSU-based VOS Conference Planning team. I've never worked with a more resilient and dedicated group of people; they've responded to every challenge that this once-in-a-lifetime global pandemic could throw at them. There have been countless hours behind the scenes and innumerous video-conference calls that have extended into the wee hours of many nights. The dedication and love that they each have for your VOS is manifest in their actions!

Dr. Ross PalmerPlease stay tuned to the VOS website (www.vosdvm.org) as our updated VIRTUAL VOS 2021 registration portal goes live! I'm looking forward to seeing you at this once-in-a-lifetime event.

by Caleb Hudson and Stan Kim
Scientific Program Chair and Assistant Scientific Program Chair

Abstract deadline extended to November 15th The VOS Board recognizes that 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone. COVID 19 has affected almost every aspect of life and may have resulted in unavoidable delays in completing research projects. With this concern in mind, we are extending the abstract submission deadline for the VOS 2021 conference to Sunday, November 15, 2020.

We invite practitioners, academicians, and researchers interested in large animal, small animal, and exotic species, to submit abstracts of novel studies in practical and scientific topics related to veterinary orthopedics and traumatology. Abstract presentations will be submitted as pre-recorded videos limited to 10 minutes. Presenters will be invited to participate in 5 minutes of live, interactive discussion after the pre-recorded video abstract presentation has been viewed during VIRTUAL VOS. Video and poster submissions will need to adhere to standard formatting specifications that will be provided upon abstract acceptance.

The call for abstracts is now open and will close on November 15th, 2020 for both podium presentations and posters. You may access the abstract submission portal from the VOS website: www.vosdvm.org or by clicking the direct link to the abstract submission portal here: https://ncsucvmce.eventsair.com/vos-conference/abstracts

SURGICAL KNOT TERMINOLOGY IN VETERINARY MEDICINE
by Brianna Grandprey
Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine
DVM Candidate, Class of 2022

Suture knots are important for surgical hemostasis and there are a variety of knots that exist for various purposes. There are inconsistencies in the current literature regarding how these knots are named. Similar structure exists among surgical knots, however subtle differences in knot configuration are clinically relevant. We need surgeons to share their opinions on knot terminology. Please watch the four videos and let us know what you think at this link: https://auburn.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_b8dBhy8WjMIAdSZ
