Eight of those ten schools are public institutions and two are private, Benedict College and Howard University. Benedict been accredited with NASAD since 2010.”

The National Association of Schools of Art and Design is composed of schools and individuals representing the highest traditions and aims in the education of the artist and designer. These members have proven, by the fact of their membership and activity in the organization, their deep interest in fostering high standards for art and design education.

Through its annual meetings, NASAD provides a national forum for discussion of the broadest considerations involving the education of the artist and designer. The National Association of Schools of Art and Design has been designated by the U.S. Department of Education as the agency responsible for the accreditation throughout the United States of freestanding institutions, and units offering art and design.

In addition, it provides a basis for public recognition of an institution’s quality.

Benedict College Police Chief Kevin Portee says the new building gives the department much-needed work and training space.

“To put it quite simply, this building gives us the opportunity to be the best. The best at being proactive. The best at student engagement and the best for growth,” says Chief Portee.

President and CEO of Benedict College, Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis says officers play many roles in students’ lives.

“They are positioning themselves as partners, as colleagues, as friends. And as I said, as mentors to our students. And in so doing, provide a valuable resource and support to the Benedict College community and to the city and county more broadly,” Dr. Artis says.

The department’s new K-9 officer also made his debut today, Officer Rayden, a one-year-old German Shepherd.

In September, Benedict College Sergeant Jeffery Demary traveled to Somerset, Texas to participate in the 4-week K9 training program before bringing the Rayden home to Benedict.

Guests were invited to tour the facility after a ceremonial ribbon cutting, and also got a look at the station’s new Chevrolet Bolt — one of the state’s first electric patrol cars.

Tigers Dominate Tuskegee For First-Ever SIAC

Football Championship

In a historic season of firsts, the Benedict College Tigers reached another milestone with their first-ever SIAC football championship by overwhelming Tuskegee 58-21 on Saturday in Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.

An emotional head coach Chennis Berry, as he always does after the team wins, gave praise to God. "We've come so far in a short period of time," Berry said. "I'm just humbled and grateful that we're here. Now we're able to say we've got the first football championship in the history of Benedict College."

The Tigers, now 11-0 on the season, had a season-high 573 yards of total offense and held Tuskegee to an opponent season-low 41 yards rushing. The Golden Tigers finished with 242 yards of total offense and scored their only two touchdowns on a pair of deep passes – for 75 and 66 yards. The Golden Tigers had 133 yards on those two pass plays, but managed just 109 total yards of offense on 48 combined other plays, and most of those came in the fourth quarter after Benedict had built an insurmountable lead.

Tigers Take On Wingate In Historic First Football Playoff Game

Since day one of the season, the mantra for the Benedict College Tigers has been to go 1-0 each day, each practice, each game. That philosophy takes on bigger meaning when the seventh-ranked and undefeated Tigers take on Wingate University in the second round of the NCAA Division II Football Championship.

"It started back in training camp. The 1-0 won't change. It was always important, but it's very, very important now because if you win, you keep playing. You lose, you go home," said Benedict head football coach Chennis Berry. "It's definitely a 1-0 mindset."

Benedict improves to 9-0 on the season, 6-0 in the SIAC. Clark Atlanta falls to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the SIAC.

"To God be the glory once again," said Benedict head coach Chennis Berry. "We're grateful any time you win a football game. I'm proud of our coaches, I'm proud of our young men and all our support staff. At the end of the day, you always want to play better. But getting a 49-20 win is still very impressive. I'm very, very thankful for that. But at the end of the day, we've got to get better and clean some things up. We did some things really well in all three phases, but we've got some things to clean up to take our program to a whole other level."

Benedict College Alumnus, Local Business Owner and Pastor Continues Change the Community

Living Word's New Location and Dedication Service

Pictured above: L-R: Elder Tilman, Rev. Dr. McCallum, and Bishop David E. Tompkins, Sr. at the Ribbon-Cutting of the new location for Living Word Church

A local church pastor and business owner continues to invest in North Columbia and work to change lives in the community. On Saturday, October 2, 2022, Bishop Dr. David E. Tompkins, Sr. and his congregation at the Living Word of Deliverance Temple Worship Center officially moved to 1323 Winyah Drive just off Interstate 20 and Monticello Road during their “New Location and Dedication Service.”

Living Word of Deliverance Temple Worship Center (Living Word) was founded in Charlotte, North Carolina, in April of 1999. In 2012, Bishop Tompkins relocated to Columbia, South Carolina, and began working alongside his brother, the late Willie A. Tompkins, at Bostick-Tompkins’ Funeral Home. As the manager, Tompkins began overseeing the daily operations in their Columbia location (2930 Colonial Drive) and later extended the business into Sumter (353 Manning Avenue). When he moved back to Columbia in 2012, Bishop Tompkins planted his ministry in the heart of downtown Columbia at 1823 Gregg Street. Still, in 2018, just six years after relocating to the Midlands, Living Word outgrew its Gregg Street home, and the church moved to a larger facility at 1722-F Broad River Road.

Bishop Tompkins states, “At Living Word, we acknowledge that if we are to be His hands, we must first possess His heart. We make ourselves available to receive everyone God allows to come our way, and we are committed to showing people the same love Jesus first showed us,” says Tompkins. Tompkins believes that this ‘open door' policy and simplicity of acceptance appealed to the growing transient population along Broad River Road. “I believe we were able to make a positive impact where we were, but we had some growing pains in terms of parking and space. And then, God presented us with an awesome opportunity to purchase a church and surrounding property in North Columbia,” adds Tompkins. Less than six months ago, Bishop Tompkins and the Living Word congregation purchased the former Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, built in 1947. Located in the Denny Terrace neighborhood off of Monticello Road, the church is in an often-overlooked area between I-20 and Columbia International University.

SC filmmaker shedding light on deadly prison riots, call to action

A South Carolina filmmaker spoke to Benedict College students about bringing reform to the Palmetto State’s prisons after a deadly riot at Lee Correctional Institution in 2018.

Officials refer to the 2018 riots at Lee Correctional as the worst the nation has seen in at least 25 years. Jaquial Durham’s documentary, ‘Southern Prison Culture’, sheds a light on seven inmates killed, and at least 18 injured, stabbed and beaten, in a riot that lasted more than seven hours at the prison.

“What fueled the passion for this documentary was having numerous conversations about the Lee Correctional riot,” said Durham. “Having conversations with someone like my father, who was incarcerated at Lee at multiple periods of his incarceration.”

The gruesome aftermath is one Durham says caused his family anguish, calling for changes inside prison walls.
