"Its not enough to just educate and tell people to exercise and move more."

The Obesity Diabetes, Heart Disease, and Stroke Prevention Grant is in its final year.  We have a new strategy this year to especially focus on supporting more walkable communities in our region. We will be putting feet to the guide that you see to the left.   It is a great first step in planning for a healthier, more walkable community. The guide explains why wayfinding is an important part of creating walkable communities, demonstrates how wayfinding can be a powerful way to impact the health of the people in a community and provides ten steps to developing a wayfinding system. Please stay tuned as we will be rolling out and reaching out to you more about this in the next month.

We would like to give a big SHOUT OUT to Duplin County Health Educator Rigoberto Castellanos for being a POWER partner in the Healthy Corner Store work.  Rigo has been instrumental in reaching out to stores with his pride and passion for public health in his county.  Rigo grew up in Duplin County and he has fond memories of shopping at one of the three Hispanic Stores that we have begun to work with.

"I remember when me and mom went shopping for groceries mom would always stop at El Mariachi Gordo first because of knowing that fresh quality vegetables for soups and fresh fruit for him to take to school were available."  -Rigo

Travis and Rigo over the past few months have been partnering with three Hispanic Stores to promote and make available healthy options with  t he big goal of having them reach the full designation.  Thanks to Rigobertos determination and relationships El Mariachi Gordo in Warsaw now has reached full designation for the NC Healthy Food Retail Designation program.
