Operation Recognition Event
By Southern Tier Region Senior Employment Counselor Stacey Smith
On September 10, 2025, the staff at the Oneonta Career Center had the honor of celebrating a remarkable moment with one of their customers, Arthur, by presenting him with his high school diploma—64 years after he left school to serve his country.
At 84 years old, Arthur was recognized for his courageous decision in 1959 to postpone his graduation in order to join the military. His dedication and sacrifice were celebrated through Operation Recognition, a program that awards high school diplomas to veterans who left school to serve during World War II, the Korean War, or the Vietnam War.
Operation Recognition exists to honor these veterans and acknowledge the educational milestones they gave up in service to the nation. Through this program, Arthur received his long-overdue diploma—a symbol of gratitude and respect for his service.
Congratulations, Arthur!
