October Parenting Tip of the Month

Being Halloween Safe

Vampires and Mermaids and Dinosaurs, oh my! It’s a spooky month full of fun costumes, changing leaves, and a lot of candy! Ready or not, Halloween is just around the corner. Whether your child will be dressing up as a little monster or a beautiful princess, it’s a fun time for families to walk the neighborhood while the kids collect candy and show off their costumes. Here are a few tips and tricks to keep Halloween safe!

  1. Make sure all costumes are fit to size; not too small, not too big, just right! This will help prevent your child from tripping over extra fabric.
  2. Try to buy costumes that are bright and reflective to make it easier for drivers to see them.
  3. Carry glowsticks! Not only does it make it easier for people to see you but they are fun to look at!
  4. Halloween and toddlers- Always have a “Plan B” costume. From diapers that leak, spit up, or accidents, for this age, it’s good to have a back-up to face the unexpected.
  5. Instead of using a mask, try non-toxic paint so it doesn’t obstruct their vision
  6. Remind your kids to look both ways before crossing the street and only cross on the corners.
  7. Walk with children under 12 years old.

You can also try doing a trunk and treating, where volunteers park their cars in safe, designated area for kids to walk around. The volunteers will decorate the trunks of their cars and pass out candy. Some trunk-and-treats events even have other games and activities for children to play. This can be a low stress option for families instead of the traditional trick-or-treating around the neighborhood. The most important thing to remember is to have fun and enjoy the time with your little ones!
