A Note From Dean Jermyn

As autumn sets in and temperatures drop, it's a reminder of a season full of transformation and growth for our SOM community. We had a busy month and share the many events that took place including OMED, Homecoming, and another successful DRIVE for Scholarship golf outing.

Embrace October's spirit of change and self-discovery, reflect on your growth, and appreciate the significance of our work, milestones, and challenges. Your dedication upholds our high standards, and together, we'll continue to strive for excellence in education, research, and compassionate health care.

I’m grateful for your continued support and look forward to the events in the months ahead!

My best regards,

Richard T. Jermyn, D.O., FAAPMR

Dean

Rowan-Virtua SOM at OMED in Orlando

Rowan-Virtua SOM participated in the annual American Osteopathic Association’s Osteopathic Medical Conference and Exposition (OMED) held in Orlando, FL October 5-8. The booth featured fun giveaways and a video highlighting SOM doctors and their research. Faculty, staff, and students greeted visitors at the booth and got to talk to Ira Monka, DO, the new AOA president and Rowan-Virtua SOM alumnus.

At the AOA Gala, also held at OMED, Shikha Patel, DO ‘21 was presented with the Outstanding Resident of the Year Award and Student Doctor Ekrem Cetinkaya was presented the AOF Golden Ticket Scholarship. Congratulations are extended to both!

Introducing the Dean's Vodcast

As the institution continues to expand, it's increasingly important to find new ways to communicate that align with our strategic goals and uphold our educational mission. To achieve this, Dean Richard Jermyn, DO is pleased to introduce the first episode of his vodcast series. The premiere episode features a conversation with Dr. Anthony Lowman, Provost and Senior Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Rowan University. The two leaders discuss Virtua Health College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Rowan University and provide insight on how merging medicine, education, and research can advance health care and biomedical discovery. Subsequent vodcasts will be available every six to eight weeks and will feature members of Rowan’s leadership team or Virtua Health College. Click here to view.

Annual General Faculty Meeting

On October 17, Dr. Jermyn, welcomed faculty to the Annual General Faculty meeting. Dr. Dina Kurzweil, Director of the Education and Technology Innovation (ETI) Office and Associate Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, was the keynote speaker. Dr. Kurzweil shared valuable insights and experience in Generative AI Tools for Medical Educators, followed by a Q&A session.

Homecoming

The chilly, rainy day didn’t stop the fun at this year’s Homecoming Celebration. The Office of Student Affairs and Alumni Engagement partnered with the OMM Student Clinic, the Student Pediatric Medical Association, Marketing, Admissions, and the Rowan Medicine OMM Department to join other University clubs and organizations at this year’s Centennial celebration.

The Student Pediatric Association hosted a Teddy Bear Clinic where they led children in physical exams of teddy bears. With the guidance of Dr. Jordan Spusta and Dr. James Healy, the OMM Student Clinic provided demonstrations and treatments to students, families, alumni, and even the Rowan University Prof!

DRIVE for Scholarships

On Sunday, October 15, Rowan-Virtua SOM held the annual DRIVE for Scholarship golf outing at Topgolf in Mount Laurel. The event was attended by over 100 alumni, student doctors, faculty, and friends who enjoyed the perfect weather and new venue. The event could not have taken place without the support of our dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors, including Inspira Health, Virtua Health, and Rowan-Virtua SOM. Thank you to all who participated in the outing, which raised $15,000 for the Alumni Association’s student scholarship fund.

Mutter Museum Student Mixer

Special thanks to Dr. & Mrs. Grover, longtime donors to our medical school, for hosting the first allied health student mixer. Students from Rowan-Virtua SOM, CMSRU, and other local medical and health professions schools were invited to attend the event at the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia. More than 150 students attended and networked with future colleagues in health care. It was a lovely evening to tour the interesting exhibits and learn about the history of medicine while meeting students from different schools in the region.

RISN – Fall Proximity Project

The Proximity Project, a diversity and inclusion firm that helps organizations build deeper and more authentic connections with marginalized communities, announced the latest national cohort of health care leaders participating in its unique racial justice training. Among the participants in the Fall 2023 Cohort are Wendy F. Aita, PhD and Danielle O’Brien from RISN. Over the next eight weeks, along with 22 other health care leaders from around the country, they will have the exciting opportunity to collaborate deeper into topics of proximity, diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion.

Joanna Petrides, MBS, Psy.D. from the Departments of Family Medicine and Psychology and chair of the Rowan-Virtua SOM Wellness Committee, shares this month’s tip for improving wellbeing.

With the cooler weather and shorter days, we naturally stay indoors more so it’s easy to become less active. When we are less active, we need fewer calories and cooler temps can lead us to search for comfort food. These satisfying treats often pack in more calories. Remember to be mindful of your input and your output to stay on top of maintaining a healthy balance.
