Congratulations to Jay and Phil Cox, winners of the National Good Neighbor Day contest that was featured in our September newsletter.
Submission by Carla and David Day:
Jay and Phil Cox are the ultimate good neighbors and deserve to be recognized for all that they do. They are leaders in our social circle of ten Highland Village couples always opening their home for our gatherings, scouring for activity ideas, taking the lead to set up outings and events and clean up afterwards. Over the past year, some members of our group have had health crises. Jay is the first to recognize the need, determine what the options are, and organize rides, food delivery, whatever is needed. She is consistently our “Go To” person!
Phil and Jay also are to be commended for the love and attention they shower on their family. They travel far and wide to extended family weddings, showers and other special events. They raised three amazing grown sons all successfully out on their own. I don’t believe that Jay or Phil ever missed a sporting event for their boys. Apparently, they willingly drove through the night to return from games in Stillwater, OK to be back at work the next day. Even today, they plan at least one family vacation per year to stay connected and spend meaningful time with their sons.
Phil’s parents who live on their own in Tennessee are elderly, quite frail, and require constant attention to their medical and day-to-day living needs. Even with the distance from Tennessee to Texas, Jay and Phil are constantly on top of the next appointment and in touch with the caregivers to ensure that they show up and do what is needed every day. They travel to Tennessee several times a year to handle special needs and reassure “Mom and Dad” that they have support throughout this stage of their lives.
Last but certainly not least, since her retirement, Jay volunteers weekly at the Salvation Army’s food distribution program, a program that has grown in importance during the economic downturn of the pandemic. Jay and Phil also have given generously of their time as volunteers at the Denton County COVID vaccination program at the Texas Motor Speedway.
There are no two finer people, and they deserve recognition for their commitment to family, friends and community.
