October  2019   1st Edition

Dear Church,

Happy Halloween! Are you sick of Pumpkin Spice yet? No really...there are masks for sale at Target if you're ready to be someone else for a while.

Pretending to be a superhero or even a villain can be fun. But many of us walk around with other masks on. We mask fears, sorrows and shames. The masks we wear are pretty, nice, polite and discrete. Then we hear the liberating call..."the truth will set you free". It is too bad that the church wears its own mask. We disguise our fears and prejudices with masks of kindness and politeness.

So it is that we have a practice of confession. It may be the case that we are too cavalier or perfunctory with our confessions. Confession is the ripping off the mask that covers our wrongdoing. (I have the image in my head of the Scooby-Doo gang pulling the mask off the villain to reveal the real criminal.) But imagine that mask also weighs 100 pounds. It's scary to be exposed. But it's freeing to lose the burden of our charades.

This Sunday we will celebrate World Communion Sunday. We will observe a moment of confession as usual. Then...after worship, I will be in the prayer room to hear any other confession anyone wants to share. It is confidential, except those cases where I am a mandatory reporter. Perhaps bringing to voice that which you've kept hidden can bring you a freedom you haven't known in a long time. Let it be.

peace,
Pastor Christopher

Hi Friends,

There's a lot happening in October. We'll be teaming up with others for a couple things as well. Be ready for a busy month in youth.

Check out the dates below.
  • Sunday, October 6: youth group, 3-5
  • Sunday, October 13: youth group, 3-5
  • Sunday, October 20: youth group, 3-5
  • Saturday, October 26: Trunk or Treat at Vancouver First UMC, 1-4
  • Saturday, October 26: Haunted Maze at Bella Organic with District Youth, right after Trunk or Treat
  • Sunday, October 27: Harvest Party, set up, 12:00, party, 3-5
We also need help from other groups and individuals to set up and run activities for kids during the party. Contact Tim if you're interested in helping out.

Harvest Party
Sunday, October 27th, 3-5

Come one, come all to the Orchards UMC annual Harvest Party. We'll have some spooky eats for all, plus games, crafts, and treats for the kids (I guess grown ups can get treats too). Everyone is encouraged to come in costume.

Looking for Volunteers:

In order to help our youth and their families focus on quality food, decorations, and a maze for the Harvest Party, we are once again looking for volunteers who could "sponsor" a game, craft, or activity for an hour of the party. We'll have game bins put together, but could really use help setting them up, helping kids at them, and taking down afterward. If anyone wants to bring treats to share, that would be great too (think cookie decorating or cupcake walk). Thanks in advance for making this an awesome event for our kids and community.

Orchards Elementary Partnership Update

Our friends at Orchards Elementary have just started the new school year. Here are some opportunities to support and partner with the Orchards Family & Community Resource Center (FCRC):

Join a conversation about next summer's ministry at Orchards Glen, and about how we can continue connecting with folks there throughout the year. Monday, October 7, 6:30pm, annex basement.

Mark your calendar for Friday Nights Out, a new opportunity! We'll eat dinner together and provide ingredients and instruction for cooking another meal. We'll be marketing it to the families served by the FCRC, and especially to the Orchards Glen families. Fridays, November 8, 15, and 22, from 6-8pm, in the church basement. Watch for more opportunities to help.

And some ongoing opportunities:
  • Rapid Response Team - if you'd like to receive notifications when we get requests from the FCRC for urgent needs of families, please let Rachon know.
  • Lunch Buddies and Classroom Volunteers are always needed. Go to http://evergreenps.org/Forms for the volunteer handbook and form.
  • Food donations for the FCRC are needed now - especially food that is easy for kids to open and prepare themselves. Drop it off at Orchards Elementary, or coordinate with Rachon to drop off at church.
And, always, please pray for the students, teachers, staff, and families. Pray that they have all they need in order to learn and grow. Pray that we can continue forming relationships between the church and the school, and that God's love may be present in all those relationships.

Thanks for supporting our community!

Initiative 1000 was passed in the 2019 state legislative session as a way to return affirmative action measures to Washington State, bringing equity to employment, contracting, and education for women, veterans, small businesses, and people of color. Now the vote has been brought to the people, and we are asking folks to look for Referendum 88 and APPROVE I-1000The language around Referendum 88 and I-1000 has been confusing over the past year, so we wanted to show you an example of the language in the ballot (as posted in "The Stand") so you can familiarize yourself with what it is asking:

As it states in the second sentence, I-1000 helps "remedy discrimination...without the use of quotas or preferential treatment." It asks whether I-1000 should be approved or rejected.  We hope you will stand for equity in our state by filling in "APPROVED" this November!
