October 2020 - 1st Edition
Our mission is to Love God, Love People and Serve Both!
"Orchards United Methodist Church welcomes and affirms people of
all sexual orientations and gender identities and supports full inclusion in every aspect of church life."
Dear Church,

I have a personal request. I hope you don't mind me making it here.

On Sunday November 1st, All Saints Day, I will be running a personal 5K in memory of David Neal. I will also make a modest symbolic donation to his church, Dallas Indian United Methodist Church.

David died in July from COVID 19. His wife Jennifer and I have been friends for almost 20 years. Among many interests and talents, David was a runner, having completed the NYC Marathon twice. You can read David's obituary at https://www.jeterandson.com/obituary/david-neal.

I am running to deepen my awareness of those suffering. If you would like to 'sponsor' this endeavor, you can send a contribution to our church office earmarked "David Neal". The first week of November those contributions will be forwarded to Dallas Indian United Methodist Church in loving memory of David Neal.

Thank you for any support you would like to give.

WHO will be done a little differently this year, we will continue with more staff from Share and not as many (if any) volunteer staff, at least to start. We are starting on Nov 1st with 30 guests. There will
be opportunities to sign up using a signup genius link that will be sent out on Oct 15th.

As we are unable to do the Applebee's breakfast fundraiser that you all have supported for so many years, there will be a link on the WHO website to donate- https://whoprogram.org/donate and other fundraising opportunities throughout the year.

The first will be a MOD Pizza dinner night on Oct 15.
The way this works is you go to the link below and register in advance (this month by 10/12) then when you order your pizza online use the code given. This month is GR159169W I think you can also go in and order and say you are there for WHO. If anyone wants to register but has technical challenges I’ll be happy to do it for you. WHO gets 20%! Looking forward to this month's meal!

FAN joins Equity in Education and a broad coalition to make sure everyone has the tools they need to succeed in this virtual reality we're living. 285,000 students do not have access to the internet, for reasons of lacking internet connection, lacking hardware (laptops, hotspot, modem), or lacking digital literacy.

Connect WA Coalition is requesting $6.1M from the state budget for:
- affordable, robust broadband internet service;
- internet-enabled devices that meet the needs of the user via a Digital Navigator Model;
- access to digital literacy training to our students, elders, and adults;
- quality technical support and a workforce development pipeline from within our BIPOC communities; and
- applications and online content designed to enable and encourage self-sufficiency, participation and collaboration.

Download their statement and sign the petition to Gov. Inslee today to make sure students in your community have the internet resources they need.
Please join us on Oct. 22 for a combined virtual Faith-Based Coffee meeting for BOTH Vancouver and Evergreen School Districts.
