October Spotlight: National Disability Employment Awareness Month:
"Celebrating Value and Talent"
Every October, we recognize National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)—a time to honor the contributions of workers with disabilities and to recommit to expanding inclusive employment opportunities. What began in 1945 as “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week” evolved into a month-long recognition in 1988 to include all forms of disability. The Department of Labor's theme this year is, “Celebrating Value and Talent,” underscores how individuals with disabilities bring essential skills, innovation, and perspective to every workplace.
People with disabilities remain underrepresented in employment, facing barriers including lack of accommodation, bias, limited access to training, and systemic exclusion. As industries evolve and work becomes more flexible, we must ensure that disabled workers are centered in conversations about accessibility, equitable hiring, capacity building, and sustainable inclusion.
We all can help! Employers can adopt inclusive hiring practices and use tools like the Job Accommodation Network (JAN) and Schedule A federal hiring routes through the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Educators and workforce developers can partner with Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agencies to make training accessible. Advocates can amplify voices and push for policy that funds supported employment and removes structural barriers.
Here are 5 notable programs and initiatives that support disability employment:
-
Ticket to Work (Social Security Administration) – Assists beneficiaries aged 18–64 who receive disability benefits to pursue work and career development.
-
Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Agencies – State/federal funded programs offering employment services, counseling, training, and placement across disability types. Admin Conference
-
Job Accommodation Network (JAN) – Provides no-cost guidance on workplace accommodations, disability employment, and employer practices.
