Eco-Friendly Tips of the Month
by Chuck Golden
Each month, as part of this newsletter, I am going to share with you my ideas
that may work for you as you strive to be more Environmentally Sustainable.
What Steps Can a Subaru Retailer Take
to Improve Reduce-Reuse-Recycle Efforts?
Listed below are numerous approaches that you, as a Subaru retailer, can take to improve your efforts to reduce waste, increase recycling, and promote reuse of materials. These initiatives not only contribute to environmental sustainability but can also save money and help create a positive brand image. Steps a retailer can take include:

1. Conduct a Waste Audit: Start by assessing your facility's waste generation patterns to identify areas for improvement. This will help you understand the types and quantities of waste generated.
2. Set Clear Goals: Establish clear and achievable waste reduction, reuse, and recycling goals to serve as benchmarks for your sustainability efforts.
3.  Train Employees: Train and educate employees about waste reduction, reuse, and recycling practices. Make sure all employees understand the importance of these efforts.
4.  Develop Recycling Program: Develop and implement a comprehensive recycling program. Educate employees to understand the importance of separating properly all paper, cardboard, plastics, metals, electronics, and other recyclable materials. Ensure that recycling bins are color-coded, labeled, and strategically placed throughout the facility.
5.  Reuse Materials: Identify opportunities to reuse materials within the facility. For example, consider reusing packing materials, pallets, and shipping containers rather than disposing of them.
6.  Reduce Single-Use Items: Minimize the use of single-use items like disposable cups, plates, and utensils in employee break rooms. Encourage the use of reusable alternatives.
7.  Recycle Hazardous Materials: Ensure proper disposal of hazardous materials such as used oil, antifreeze, and batteries. Partner with certified disposal companies for these materials.
8.  Compost: If applicable, set up a composting program for organic waste, such as food scraps and yard trimmings, generated in the facility.
9. Reduce Supplier Packaging: Encourage your suppliers to reduce packaging and use eco-friendly materials for the products they deliver to your facility.
10. Buy Recycled Products: Source office supplies and other items made from recycled content to close the loop on recycling.
11. Participate in Recycling Programs: Collaborate with local recycling organizations and programs to ensure that recyclables are collected, processed, and recycled effectively.
12. Educate Customers: Inform customers about your facility's recycling and sustainability efforts. Encourage them to participate in environmentally responsible practices, such as recycling and proper disposal of vehicle-related waste.
13. Track and Measure Progress: Implement a system for tracking waste reduction, reuse, and recycling metrics. Regularly measure and report your progress to employees, customers, and stakeholders.
14. Evaluate Continuous Improvement: Continuously evaluate and improve your waste reduction, reuse, and recycling programs. Be open to feedback and adapt your initiatives to achieve better results over time.

By taking these steps, Subaru retailers can make significant strides in reducing waste, increasing recycling rates, and promoting reuse practices. These efforts not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also demonstrate a commitment to responsible business practices, which can be appealing to customers and employees alike.

& Used Banner Recycling
How many old and/or no-longer-in-use banners, such as the one in the photo above, do you have taking up space in your retail facility? If you're unsure about the proper disposal, remember the eco-friendly "Three Rs -- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" and follow the example of Southern Oregon Subaru in Medford, Oregon. Rocky Rawstern, Team Leader of the SOSubaru Green Team, Digital Media Manager at SOSubaru, and a Jackson County Master Recycler, rolls up the banners and simply sends them back to Subaru with a pre-paid shipping label. What's even better is that you can purchase items made from these upcycled banners! Click here for additional information, including how to request the pre-paid shipping labels.
National Recycling Day -- November 15, 2023
Coming up on November 15, National Recycling Day, also known as America Recycles Day, is the perfect opportunity to do your part and promote sustainability. Recycling is a simple but powerful way to help protect the environment and conserve natural resources. By recycling, we can reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and incinerators, save energy, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By showcasing National Recycling Day at your retail facility and involving your customers, you can make a difference in your community and help create a more sustainable future for all of us. Let us know your action plans to promote November 15. Let's celebrate this day and take action towards a greener, cleaner world!
Earth Day & Innovations in Plastic Cleanup
Plastics pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time, with devastating effects on marine life and human health. Fortunately, there are effective strategies that can be implemented to mitigate this problem. These include reducing plastic use, improving waste management systems, promoting recycling and composting, and investing in research and development of sustainable materials. By taking action on these fronts, we can work towards a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for ourselves and the planet.

As we mentioned in our August newsletter, Earth Day has already chosen "Planet vs. Plastics." as their theme for 2024. The Earth Day web site recently featured an article about innovations in plastic cleanup:

"Plastic pollution forces an insurmountable toll on our environment. With 269,000 tons of plastics floating on the ocean’s surface and 24.4 trillion microplastics below the waterline, innovative solutions are necessary. The scientific and technological realms have jointly unlocked plastic cleanup innovations as powerful tools to reinvigorate Earth and mitigate the presence of plastics in our global waters.

Although a daunting task, the mobilization of emerging technologies is the key catalyst for restoring ecosystems. Dive into the world of infinite possibilities at the forefront of innovation and sustainability below:

  • Booms and Barriers
  • Beach Cleaning Machines
  • Deploying Technologies into the Field"

You can read the entire article here.

Please continue to make every effort you can at your retail facility to ensure that as much plastic as possible is recycled and kept out of the landfills and waterways. Plastics pollution is a huge problem that can't be solved quickly...but each and every one of us can certainly make a difference!
