October 9, 2018

Dear Stanwich Parents,

Before starting this letter, I reviewed the October 2017 Stanwich Parent letter. Wow, what a difference a year makes! Last year I wrote about Stanwich Values, Moral Leadership, and active learning. Although blasting and school integration now lead the list of institutional foci, Stanwich's institutional culture continues to guide our course.

The blasting incident two weeks ago resulted in a thorough assessment by a third party organization and a revision of procedures. No further blasting will occur during school hours, the overlap on the blasting mats will be increased, and the building will be swept by contractor representatives to ensure that all areas that could be affected are cleared. We are confident that no such incidents will occur again.

Despite the wet weather, our contractors continue to make good headway. I remain confident that our great Stanwich Class of 2019 Graduation will be held in the new Commons. However if something unexpected should occur, Plans B and C exist as contingencies to ensure no disruption to our academic and extracurricular programs.

In my meeting with Stanwich faculty tomorrow afternoon, Adam Rohdie and I will preview our faculty rehiring process for 2019-2020. This year's process will be similar to the rehiring process since 2015-2016. In the last three years, we rehired teachers to meet programmatic and enrollment needs. Again this year, teachers will meet individually with administrators to discuss the process and possibilities before winter break, and the first wave of contracts will be offered in late January or early February. Although the process will be the same, GCDS representatives will be involved besides Stanwich Division Heads and myself.

This fall GCDS administrators are doing double duty overseeing their responsibilities on Old Church Road and getting to know their future colleagues from Stanwich. Suffice to say, many professional perspectives are engaged in order to ensure the best decisions possible concerning the educational program and timely communication of those decisions.

Our circumstances may affect how "Stanwichy" decisions feel during the next nine months of institutional gestation. If Stanwich parents have input on the transition and the integration process, I encourage them to communicate those perspectives to me or to Janill Sharma, PA President. She and I work closely, in consultation with Stanwich Division Heads and the Integration Committee, to channel appropriate information and timely communication in the most effective fashion possible.

Stanwich parents should recently have received this year's Annual Fund solicitation. As always we hope every family will be able to make a gift, regardless of size, to maintain Stanwich's record of strong parent support. Although gifts need not be made before June 30, we hope all gift pledges can be recorded before the end of this calendar year.

Finally some reminders: Any parents interested in applying another child (not currently attending Stanwich) to Greenwich Country Day School for the 2019-2020 school year, should do so by October 15. These children will be given priority during the admission process, assuming their Stanwich siblings re-enroll via contract submission to GCDS in January. Having the sibling applications submitted prior to October 15 allows the GCDS admissions office the opportunity to plan for additional admission spaces accordingly. Also please note that current Stanwich students DO NOT need to apply to Greenwich Country Day. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Keith Radcliffe at kradcliffe@gcds.net or call 203-863-5634.

Parents in Grade 6 to 11 are reminded of the meeting at GCDS tomorrow evening starting at 7:00pm to learn more about next year's high school program. We hope to see everyone at the Fall Festival this coming Friday from noon to 2:00pm to benefit Project Blessing. Looking to next month, Stanwich families are extended an invitation to attend Greenwich Country Day School's Book Fair on Sunday, November 4 from 1:00 to 4:00pm.

Finally don't forget to sign up for parent/teacher conferences from 3:00 to 8:00pm next Wednesday for Upper School parents, and Thursday from 3:00 to 8:00pm, and Friday from 8:00am to 1:00pm for all parents. Please remember that school will be closed on Friday, October 19.
Sincerely,

Charles Sachs
Head of School
