Beaver Lake Grand Opening and WLP Pint Night!
Beaver Lake Trail & Lakeshore
Thursday, Oct. 17 @ 6:00 pm
Join WLP and project partners to celebrate completion of 1-mile new trail and improvements at Beaver Lake. Improved pedestrian lake access, trail connectivity, trail kiosk, and a scenic viewing platform are just a few of the new amenities. This project was funded by the Montana Recreation Trails Program, volunteer support, and a generous donation by Paul and Wendy Faganel.
Great Northern Brewing Co.
October 17th 5:00 pm-close
After the Beaver Lake Grand Opening, head to Great Northern Brewing Company to celebrate another awesome year recreating on our local open lands. $1 from every pint sold will be donated back to the Whitefish Trail and our local protected lands. We'll have project maps on hand and would love to talk to you about our next exciting project at Smith Lake. We'll see you there to raise a glass for the trail!
WT Haskill & Trail Etiquette
Simply put, the Whitefish Trail in Haskill is different because of the area's topography. Nowhere else does the Whitefish Trail climb or descend 1,600' in 5 miles. Whether using Haskill for an uphill training ride or run or enjoying the downhill connectivity to town, trail etiquette reminders are always beneficial. We have installed NEW signs along the Haskill Trail to highlight some important rules and reminders:

  1. The Whitefish Trail is a multi-use, multi-directional trail
  2. ALWAYS control your speed
  3. Hikers must yield to horseback and bikers must yield to BOTH
  4. Uphill traffic always has the right of way
Early October Trail Report
By Alan Myers-Davis, WLP Director of Development
Back to our regularly scheduled programming! Old man winter couldn't keep fall away for good, but he sure left a mark on Montana. While Whitefish escaped the historic snowstorm of late September, high winds battered the landscape last weekend. We have gotten multiple reports of downed trees across the entire trail system, and volunteers are working hard to get them cleared as soon as possible. If you encounter a downed tree, send us a trail report with a specific location to info@whitefishlegacy.org.

With below freezing morning temperatures and cottonwood, Rocky Mountain maple, and aspen trees turning colors, fall is in full swing on the Whitefish Trail. Larch needles are starting to turn yellow at higher elevations and their iconic golden hues should peak in mid-October. NOW is the time to get outside before the snow really starts flying. As a reminder, archery hunting season is open until October 20th, and general rifle hunting season opens on October 26th.

With one of the wettest summers in recent memory, the mushrooms have been superb for this late in the season. Chantrelles, boletus, and other fungi have been blooming in response to wet storms and mild temps. It's the perfect time to hunt for fungi, so join us for our last guided hike of the year on October 13th. Meet at the Woods Lake trailhead at 2pm as we hunt for wild mushrooms with local expert Dale Johnson. Bring a basket and the whole family!
