HLT Expands Idell Preserve

Hunterdon Land Trust permanently protected another 15 acres of forest in Kingwood Township resulting in an expansion of its Idell Preserve to 72 acres. Hunterdon Land Trust has now preserved 11,861 acres.

The project began when HLT’s Director of Administration and Events, Laura Orbine, drove down Barbertown Idell Road and spotted a “for sale” sign on vacant land adjacent to the Idell Preserve. Thanks to her catch and the interest of the seller to see the land preserved, Hunterdon Land Trust’s land acquisition staff then pursued funding to purchase the property. A contract was signed in April and the purchase was completed this September.

With this strategic acquisition, a corridor of more than 300 acres of connected open space and farmland lies between Barbertown-Idell Road and Byram-Kingwood Road. These greenways of preserved land are crucial for wildlife to move throughout the landscape to find food and shelter. Connected landscapes support biodiversity, making our region more resilient in the face of flooding, invasive species, and other stressors. Protecting property in the floodplain with forested wetlands promotes clean water, healthy watersheds, and aquatic habitats.

“We are thrilled to have expanded one of our own preserves, particularly one as unique and valuable as Idell Preserve,” says Emily Dunn, HLT’s Director of Stewardship and Digital Media. “We have invested in this preserve over the past two years, including planting more than 300 native trees, installing bilingual interpretive signage, doubling the length of the trail, and removing invasive species. This new addition builds on these efforts and protects even more of this forest, filled with amphibian habitat and a diversity of native plants.”

Catherine Suttle, HLT’s Executive Director, adds, “We are delighted that this latest project forwards our mission of fostering healthy ecosystems and communities in the Hunterdon County region. We are grateful to the many partners that made this preservation success possible. We especially want to thank our partners that funded the project including the New Jersey Green Acres Program, Hunterdon County, National Park Service’s Lower Delaware Wild and Scenic Rivers Program, and Kingwood Township.”

Hunterdon Land Trust invites the public to visit Idell Preserve and enjoy this protected open space. Parking and the trailhead are located on Barbertown-Idell Road just south of Tumble Idell Road in Kingwood Township. The preserve is open from dawn to dusk seven days a week.

Dinner at Dvoor Highlights

It was a perfect night for a party! Hunterdon Land Trust held its fall fundraiser in two of the Dvoor Farm’s historic buildings on September 14th. The wagon house, rehabilitated in 2017 as a meeting space and rustic classroom, and the bank barn, with its initial rehabilitation phase completed, were great venues for the gathering.

New Jersey Historic Trust Grant

NJ Historic Trust Board of Trustees recommended Hunterdon Land Trust for a multi-phase grant from the Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund totaling $2.25 million over the next several years. This is capital funding for the Dvoor Farm Project. Once the award is authorized by the Garden State Preservation Trust and approved by the Legislature and Governor, $750,000 will be available in the first year.

Farmers' Market Updates

Pumpkins and vegetables from Sweet Valley Farms

After 18 years of hosting the Farmers’ Market, Hunterdon Land Trust is passing the reins to a newly formed non-profit led by Dean and Emily Buttacavoli of Cabbage Throw Farm. They will manage the new market, which will be named the Hunterdon Community Farmers Market, beginning with the 2025 season. The Market will continue to be held at Dvoor Farm on Sundays from 9 AM to 1 PM. We will share more information for vendors and the public early in 2025.

In the meantime, we hope you'll join us at the Market this fall! Visit the Dvoor Farm every Sunday through November 24th - you can follow the market's Facebook page for weekly updates on vendors and special events.

HLT Applies for Accreditation Renewal

The land trust accreditation program recognizes land conservation organizations that meet national quality standards for protecting important natural places and working lands forever. Originally accredited in 2014, Hunterdon Land Trust is pleased to announce it is applying for renewal of accreditation. A public comment period is now open.

The Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance, conducts an extensive review of each applicant’s policies and programs. The Commission invites public input and accepts signed, written comments on pending applications. Comments must relate to how Hunterdon Land Trust complies with national quality standards. These standards address the ethical and technical operation of a land trust. For the full list of standards see http://www.landtrustaccreditation.org/help-and-resources/indicator-practices.

To learn more about the accreditation program and to submit a comment, visit www.landtrustaccreditation.org, or email your comment to info@landtrustaccreditation.org.
