The Power of One Campaign

I have visited half the clubs in #UtahRotary so far, and I am having a blast. It is so much fun meeting and getting to know our great Utah Rotarians. To those clubs I have visited, thank you for your great hospitality and warm welcome. To the clubs I have yet to visit, I look forward to seeing you soon.

As I have visited with the various clubs and boards, I have noticed that most have not begun to strategize and execute on the Power of One Campaign. I think most Presidents have been waiting for me to come and introduce it, which I am doing. However, I don’t want you to lose any more time. It’s time to charge!

Here is The Power of One Campaign, if you have not discussed this yet in your club I encourage you to bring it up, discuss your strategies and develop a cadence of accountability to execute those strategies.

The Power of One Campaign

  1. Each club grows membership by one net member.
  2. Each club grows their best year out of the last seven years of per capita giving to the Rotary Foundation by $1.
  3. Engage in the broader world of Rotary:

  1. Each Club President attends a District, Zone or International event and brings one Rotarian who never has.
  2. Each Foundation Chair attends one District, Zone or International event and brings one Rotarian who hasn’t given to the Rotary Foundation beyond what is committed by the club through dues.
  3. Each Membership Chair attends one District, Zone or International event and brings one prospective Rotarian.

That’s it. If your club chooses to engage in The Power of One Campaign, your club will be better, stronger and more impactful as a result.

One decision you make can literally change the world. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, a colonel in the army of the Potomac during the civil war, made a decision to charge that changed the course of a battle, which changed the course of a war that changed the course of a nation, our nation. One decision you make can literally change the world. Remember it all comes down to the power of one to create hope in the world.

Charge!

Three Initiatives You Can Join to Support Excellent Causes

Moab Rotary Helps Open a School

For Displaced Ukrainian Children

A coalition of organizations including the Moab Rotary Club has helped open a new school in Budapest, Hungary to educate children displaced by the war in Ukraine. according to a press release from Moab Rotary President Melissa Stocks.

The school was made possible by an amazing partnership of two Rotary districts; seven Rotary clubs in Hungary and the U.S., including Moab’s; and two churches, the Latter-day Saint Mission in Budapest (thanks to Bruce Louthan) and the Greek Orthodox Church in Hungary.

Currently outfitted for 190 students, the school hopes to serve as a beacon of help for the community. It will provide Ukrainian children the opportunity to learn and grow and helps provide some level of normality for children that have suffered so much.

The war in Ukraine has left much uncertainty for the lives of the children. Here’s how you can help:

  • Donate: Any amount you can contribute will bring us closer to our goal. Whether it’s $10, $100 or more, your donation will make an impact.
  • Corporate matching: If your employer offers a matching gift program, your donation may be matched, effectively doubling your contribution.

To donate, please contact Stocks at mstocks20@gmail.com or 435-220-1258.

Support the American Cancer Society - Register a Foursome or Donate to the Southern Utah Golf Classic

Three southern Utah clubs are working with the American Cancer Society Utah to help raise funds through its inaugural Southern Utah Golf Classic on Friday, October 6 at the newly opened Black Desert Resort in St. George.

Hurricane Valley, St. George Sunrise, and Washington Rotaries, with the support of Past District Governor Jose Velasco, have challenged all District 5420 clubs to contribute a collective $25,000 gift to support this amazing cause. This effort will support transportation for patients to access the critical care they need. It will also demonstrate Rotary’s commitment to “Service Above Self.” Although the event will happen soon, donations will be accepted through the end of October.

A donation of $1,000 is recommended, but other amounts are very welcomed. You can donate here.

Foursomes are still available for a $4,000 donation. A limited number of those are available. Click here to register a foursome:  https://e.givesmart.com/events/u6R/page/registration/

Questions about the golf tournament and foursome sign up should go to Catina Struble, catina.struble@cancer.org, 800-227-2345.

CHOICE Humanitarian in Salt Lake City

Can Connect You with a Foreign Club

Rotarians often ask “How can we get to know a foreign Rotary Club to do an international project?”

The power of Rotary is to partner with an in-country club that knows the community, can do the essential “community assessment,” and be there after the project to assure sustainability. One way to get to know a host club is to contact the non-profit CHOICE Humanitarian.

A number of our Rotary clubs have enjoyed working with CHOICE, which has field offices with very qualified full-time staff who are already working with reliable Rotary clubs in Nepal, Kenya, Guatemala, Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.

Call Lonny Ward, CHOICE Humanitarian Director of Operations, 801-404-4483, to discuss different projects in different countries. Quoting Lonny, “CHOICE Humanitarian and Rotary make a powerful team."

What most characterizes CHOICE?

  • The have ongoing relationships with in-country Rotary clubs
  • Projects are driven by the local community.
  • The focus is to build self-reliant, resilient communities
  • They have field offices with very qualified full-time staff members who are native so that they know and understand the culture, needs and challenges of the villagers.
  • CHOICE is highly respected in communities they single out to help.

Jerry Summerhays, District International Service Chair, SummerhaysGS@gmailcom, can help you partner with CHOICE and the in-county foreign club to access the matching money from The Rotary Foundation.

Important Rotary Dates This Month

World Polio Day Is October 24

Will you throw your club president from an airplane or another – but equally significant - event to highlight Rotary’s progress in eradicating only the 2nd human disease in history (after smallpox)? Host a concert? A walk, ride, run or cycling event? Flood your local media – social and otherwise – with the good news about how close we are to the endgame in this 37+ year fight? Create a “Raise for Rotary” online fundraiser? Write a letter to the editor of your local paper? Sign up 100% of your club members for the Polio Plus Society at only $8.33 a month? Or something even “bigger, better and bolder?”

Let’s not let October 24 go by without informing our communities how close we are to making this dreaded virus “ancient history!”

Find logos, photos, videos, and other resources in RI’s Brand Center … or on the EndPolioNow.org website. There’s still time to plan something interesting, informative, and fun … and if you have a great story and/or photos from your recent #EndPolio activity, please register it at https://www.endpolio.org/register-your-event.

World Interact Week is Oct. 30-Nov. 5

During the week of October 30 – November 5, the Rotary world will celebrate World Interact Week to recognize the impact made by the current 342,953 Interactors, ages 12-18, since 1962.

What will your club do to acknowledge these future Rotarians?

How about organizing a joint “service above self” project involving your club and your Interactors … invite Interactors to present at an upcoming Rotary meeting (and vice versa) … schedule a presentation to a Rotary club which does not currently sponsor an Interact club … or plan ahead to support a “protecting the environment” event on National Youth Service Day anytime on the weekend of April 26-28?

For more information on supporting or starting an Interact club at your local middle, intermediate and/or high school, see rotary.org or reach out to District 5420’s Interact Chair Michael Anglin at Michael.anglin@gmail.com.

Time is Passing - Act Now!

The 22-23 Rotary year ended nearly three months ago! That means this year is a fourth over! AMAZING!! Your new Presidents are not really new! No matter what your responsibility is in Rotary, you should now be fairly deep into it!

How are all your plans? Are you getting done what you had hoped?

As club President, I decided I wanted our club to do a Global Grant. It was our first Global Grant. Two and a half years later the club had completed our first Global Grant! It took a lot of time, more than I had anticipated but, it was unbelievably satisfying. So much so, my club has now completed dozens of Global Grants. Success cannot be measured in how long it takes but by its accomplishment.

One plan that can be accomplished by every Rotarian in this Rotary year is donating to the Rotary Foundation, encouraging others to make donations, signing up for Rotary Direct, donating to a Rotary relief fund, or, as our district Governor has asked, donate one more dollar than you did in your best year!

Time is passing, act now!

Bruce Powell

Utah Rotary District Foundation Chair

RI Convention in Singapore

May 25-29, 2024

Singapore's first prime minister became known as the "Chief Gardener" for his vision of the city's green future. Today, the merging of nature and ultra-modern cityscape is an example of the 2024 Rotary Convention city's frequent self-reinvention. Check out the September issue of Rotary magazine to find out why Singapore's shape-shifting is key to its success. Register for the convention and experience it for yourself.

Bountiful Rotary helped clean monuments and weed at the Bountiful Veteran’s Park for Utah’s day of service on 9-11. We had 65 people show up to help! It was incredible. Thanks to all who heard the call to serve and came to our aide. We loved having DG John Redd and Nicole Redd! They are the epitome of service above self.

“Service Above Self” became “Service Above the City” for Hurricane Valley Rotarians on September 11 as they took part in sprucing up the “H” on the ridgeline above the city of Hurricane. Club President Clint Lawton said Rotarians from Washington and St. George Sunrise joined the effort, as well as Hurricane Lions Club members. The rocks forming the “H” were straightened up and painted, and trash and debris were removed. The project was just one of many efforts pairing the club with cities in Hurricane Valley. Projects such as the “H,” the new Rotary all-abilities playground, and a future Veterans Memorial Park are examples of work to benefit all concerned.

Last month the Cedar City Rotary Club got to meet our Rotary Youth Exchange Student, Sasha! Sasha, whose father is also a Rotarian, is from Ukraine and we are so excited to host him. He spoke briefly to our club and inspired us all with his love of education and culture, his tenacious spirit, and his service-mindedness.

We also enjoyed serving Cedar City as it prepared for its annual half-marathon. We helped stuff around 800 goody bags for the runners, and many Rotarians volunteered during the actual event as well. We love serving our community!

Millcreek Rotary Club’s Wine Into Water fundraiser generated total revenues of $19,661. After covering our expenses, our net take stands at an impressive $9,300. As is our cherished tradition, half of our raised funds will be directed to WhoLives. This incredible nonprofit will employ our contributions to dig life-changing wells in several Ghana villages. Additionally, we will support NavajoStrong. Their efforts in the Four Corners region ensure the installation of vital water storage tanks on the Mesa, significantly enhancing the quality of life for the elder members of the Navajo community. The other half of our funds will be utilized to uplift and fortify local organizations. These groups tirelessly create hope for many within our community, and it's an honor to bolster their missions.

The Ogden Rotary Club furthered its connection to the community by hosting the Ogden Regional Drug & Rehab Center and learned of ways in which the local community is reaching out and empowering those with rehab needs to build a better life. Over the past month, the Club also volunteered at the 9/11 Memorial Service at the Weber County Fairgrounds, learned from the Weber County Sheriff's Department on the most effective ways to assist and interact with law enforcement, and learned more about Rotary's ongoing fight against Polio. The Ogden Rotarians are on the move!

On August 24th, the Rotary Club of Orem-Lindon (RCOOL) joined Hope4Orem, a nonprofit that promotes mental health and suicide prevention in Orem and surrounding communities, for their annual event. We hosted a Mental Wellness Fair. Several Rotarians and UVU-Rotaractors helped with setup, take down, unloading, and loading of vehicles. We also learned about the mental health resources available along the Wasatch Front. There were 30+ organizations, including Live-On and NAMI. There were food trucks, live music, face painting, balloon twisters, COSMO, and more! An estimated 400 people attended.

Murray Rotary Club partnered with the Murray High School Interact Club as well as 17 'Just Serve' volunteers to turn out a total of 60 people to paint 132 sections of fence as well as 13 tables/benches in Murray Germania Park on Saturday September 9. As part of the National Day of Service week the volunteers did a great job and enjoyed the wonderful Fall weather and fellowship of working together to make Murray a better place. Of course, having a good supply of donuts helped get the morning off to a good start!!

St. George Rotary Club’s busy September found members attending D5420’s “social event of RY2023-24” in black ties and boots hosted by District Governor John Redd. In recognition of Rotary International’s Basic Education and Literacy Month, club members read to children at a local elementary school. We raised funds in the 10th annual “Swing for Literacy” golf tournament and purchased and presented more than $750 worth of beautiful new books to the St. George Children’s Museum. We also learned about a reverse global grant for placing book vending machines in Washington County’s five Title 1 schools and inducted three new members!

Julie Benson, Home Director for Encircle in St. George, told Washington City Rotary Club members that her most important message is focused on inclusivity for the people the organization serves.

Encircle provides a safe environment for all members of the St. George community, and for LGBTQ+ youth and young adults—that means a place to study, connect with others, and obtain the resources they want and need including mental health services.

Lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth are three times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers.

Encircle’s services nurture healthy social connections, develop essential emotional and psychological skills, and foster positive well-being through authenticity, resulting in over 98% success rate in achieving improved mental health outcomes.

Park City Sunrise Rotary chose Bear Lake State Park, Utah, for their annual family camping excursion. Beautiful weather, full hookups, hiking, swimming (yes in 70 degree water), kayaking, and a fabulous pot luck dinner were part of the fall weekend.

The club is preparing for their annual service project -- Hazardous Waste Collection Day on October 30.

The 7th annual Park City Sunrise Shot Ski fundraiser is calling all hands on deck for their fundraiser in partnership with High West Distillery. The event nets $40,000 to $50,000 for the club's grants program. This year's Shot Ski will be held on October 21 on Park City's Main Street. Yes, they close it for the event!
