From Ballet Vero Beach:

Ballet Vero Beach's Fellowship Initiative For Dancers is changing the way young people become professional dancers. Working with Indian River State College and The Learning Alliance, Ballet Vero Beach has established a unique program that combines professional performance experience with the company, quality higher education with Indian River State College, and unmatched training in arts integration, arts literacy, and the science of teaching with The Learning Alliance.

At the end of the two-year program, fellows emerge with an Associate or Bachelor Degree from Indian River State College, resumé-building

professional experience with Ballet Vero Beach, ancillary education from The Learning Alliance, and hands-on teaching experience provided through Ballet Vero Beach's education and engagement initiatives. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to thrive in both the college and company environments offered by this unique program.

The Fellowship Initiative For Dancers is free for both Florida residents and International Students. Ballet Vero Beach reimburses non Florida resident domestic students at the Indian River State College in state tuition rate. Books/materials are covered for all students. Candidates may choose from nearly any major at IRSC, however applicants seeking to major in Education (Early Childhood/Elementary/Special/Exceptional Tracks) will be prioritized for admission.

A typical weekly schedule for fellows includes daily class and rehearsals with Ballet Vero Beach, in-person and online courses at Indian River State College, and delivery of Ballet Vero Beach's innovative education and community engagement initiatives. Fellows are provided free chiropractic care, wellness screenings, and reduced cost physical therapy appointments. Additionally Ballet Vero Beach provides all rehearsal and performance shoes.

Fellowship Program dancers this season are Abriella Mauldin, Jade Princessa, Darien Santos, and Marlyse Noble.

MARLYSE NOBLE

How old were you when you took your first dance lesson? How did it come about?

My mother always hoped that I would pursue an artistic style of dance and, therefore, was always making sure I was surrounded by classical music and dance as a child. So, even before attending an actual lesson, I was always found to be dancing about the house. I took my first ballet lesson when I was three years old, and have loved it ever since.

When and why did you decide to make dancing your career?

The more I’ve studied ballet, the closer I’ve been drawn to the art form. Fortunately, I have had the opportunity of studying ballet worldwide which has provided me with a deep appreciation of how effective the art from still is to this day, and how communicative it is despite the language being spoken and location it may be done from. Much like Ballet Vero Beach’s motto, ballet truly is a universal language. Being able to be a part of an interconnected art form as such has kept me gracious as a dancer from the very beginning and has caused me to want to spread the abundant love, joy, and emotion that dance has given me, to audiences wherever I can.

Was it always ballet for you?

Actually, when I was in middle school, I aspired to do both musical theatre and ballet. I’ve always loved to sing and was heavily involved in choir and vocal lessons as a kid, but had to cut back within that department as the demands of professional ballet consume a lot of time.

Are you interested in any other art forms?

Very much so. Alongside ballet, I’ve studied a fair amount of contemporary styles of dance. The realm of contemporary I’ve recently dove into explores movement on more of a minimalistic scale that’s executed unmasked and quite vulnerably. It’s been an interesting addition for me as an artist, as in ballet, we’re typically found to be portraying some sort of character or specific feeling, where in contrast, in this sort of contemporary, the movement revolves around the dancers raw genuineness in emotion and physicality, which makes it very exciting and different for an audience to view as everything is fresh and authentic each time it’s performed.

What is it like to be part of Ballet Vero Beach?

Ballet vero beach is one of the most positive environments I’ve ever worked in. It’s a small company, which is amazing because it really gives all of us a chance to be personal with one another, and connect in a way that is visible for our audience. The dancing is always exciting; I’m thrilled to be starting my first season here and cannot wait for the memories to come.

What are you looking forward to the most this season?

Honestly, the opportunity to be able to perform consistently and grow as an artist within the American style of ballet has me the most excited.

How do you stay in shape — exercise program, diet?

I love this question because it varies so much from ballet dancer to ballet dancer- it truly is all about finding what works best for you individually. Ballet is highly demanding both physically AND mentally, so it’s highly important to focus and continuously check in on both aspects. I focus first on mental strength. Things I’ve found to help me consist of meditating daily, building habits of showing up early to go over corrections and movements before class, never leaving the dance building feeling unfulfilled, practicing affirmations, and making sure to allow time for myself to be a human and only that, as my experiences as a living person is what makes for inspiration in my art. For physical well-being, I enjoy going to the gym daily and doing various cross training activities such as Pilates, walking, yoga, spin classes, and so on. Stretching properly (not too much not too little) is also a huge aspect of keeping resilient for me. Likewise with getting enough sleep at night, and eating a well rounded diet that fuels my activity level and satisfaction level. As an athlete, these factors are highly important for me to stay healthy and provide longevity for myself.

Colors of Fall in Suntree

Central Florida Winds welcomes autumn in season-opening concert

If the air is a little bit cooler, it's time for a brand new season of music by the Central Florida Winds. On Sunday, October 8 at 3:00 p.m., the premier wind ensemble of Central Florida will present Colors of Fall -- a free concert at Suntree United Methodist Church, 7400 N. Wickham Road in north Melbourne. Inspired by the changing season, Colors of Fall will feature a variety of international and "colorful" works to welcome autumn. The audience can expect to hear the robust and lively "Zampa Overture" by French composer Ferdinand Herold, along with the lighthearted and fun "Handel in the Strand" by Percy Grainger of Australia. A strong Irish sound is introduced by the Manx tone poem, "Mannin Veen," while a definite Latin Flair is heard in Danza No. 2 by Marquez. Trombonist and Instrumental Music Teacher at Titusville High School, Ian Schwindt will be featured in "Colors," a contemporary work for solo trombone and wind ensemble by Belgium's Bert Appermont. Attendees to Colors of Fall are encouraged to arrive early for best seating. While all concerts by the Central Florida Winds are free, a donation of $10 is suggested. Call (321) 405-2359 or visit CFWinds.org for a complete concert schedule of the Central Florida Winds and their chamber ensemble.

Colors of Fall will be directed by Central Florida Winds conductor and founder, Richard Sabino, who had help configuring the October season-opening concert.

“Each of the works on the program was recommended by members of the Central Florida Winds," said Sabino, who began the group in 1999. "The musical numbers are all colorful in their own different ways and perfect for a Sunday afternoon in October."

Under the baton of Richard Sabino, the nonprofit Central Florida Winds and its chamber ensemble performs free concerts from the classical musical repertoire in the fall, winter and spring months throughout Brevard County. In addition to his work with the Central Florida Winds and the Riverside Chamber Orchestra in Cocoa Beach, Maestro Sabino has experience conducting orchestras in the U.S. and abroad. Call (321) 405-2359 or visit CFWinds.org for more information about the all-volunteer musical organization.

Elegant Threads at Lighthouse ArtCenter

Janeen Mason, curator at Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta is bustin' her buttons over Elegant Threads, a very special exhibit at the gallery through December 2.

"Traditionally defined as 'women’s work,' and historically given little recognition, the field of fiber arts has finally come into its own," Mason said. "Every day we wrap our bodies and our homes in comfort and color, yet this has become so familiar that we’ve taken for granted the experience. Elegant Threads provides the opportunity for us to interact with the imaginations, craftsmanship, and patience represented by these artists who celebrate their profound understanding of the comfort derived from beautiful fiber in our lives."

The original call-to-artists asked for images of work that loosely incorporated fiber in wearable art, non-wearable art, and surface design, Mason said. "These categories left the definition open to interpretation, and the exhibition, featuring hundreds of pieces, began to weave itself into focus. As the applicants responded we poured over the breathtaking photos of their work with the knowledge that Lighthouse ArtCenter had another season-opening blockbuster exhibition to showcase."

"Having an original Bisa Butler Quilted Portrait on loan from the private collection of Beth Rudin DeWoody, as well as three other major works, transports this exhibition to a rarefied atmosphere. These pieces by world renowned artists, coupled with the generous support of anonymous donors, make it possible to mount an exhibition on this scale. For this, and so much more, we are grateful."

From the website:

"Showcasing a collection of mesmerizing creations, Elegant Threads is set to captivate art enthusiasts and fashion connoisseurs alike with awe-inspiring clothing, jewelry, accessories, and non-wearable works that blend traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics. Visitors will be immersed in a world where textures, colors, and patterns evoke a range of emotions, from joy and serenity to introspection and passion.

Juried artwork from a nationwide call to artists working in both wearable and non-wearable fiber arts and jewelry compete for $4,000 in awards while being showcased along with masterpieces by internationally renowned artists such as Bisa Butler, El Anatsui, and Guilia Andreani, which are on loan from the private collections of Beth Rudin DeWoody and Douglas B. Andrews."

The A.E. Backus Gallery & Museum is closed for exhibition installation September 30 – October 7.
