Someone to Trust by Mary Balogh
A gentle and enjoyable historical romance, this fifth book in the Westcott series follows Elizabeth and Colin as a spark from a Christmas kiss develops into something deeper. I particularly enjoyed the unique age-gap dynamic, with Elizabeth being nine years older, and the thoughtful exploration of her recovery from an abusive first marriage. While the large Westcott family can be a little overwhelming and sometimes leads to repeated explanations, the natural family-based interactions between the characters make their romance feel authentic. Overall, a pleasant and easy read for fans of historical romance.

Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi
Transcendent Kingdom is a moving and deeply reflective novel that follows Gifty, a Stanford neuroscience student trying to make sense of the addiction, depression, and loss that have shaped her family. As she researches the science behind suffering, she is also drawn back to the faith of her childhood, wrestling with questions about religion, identity, and hope. Through the story of a Ghanaian immigrant family facing grief and hardship, Yaa Gyasi delivers a beautifully written and emotionally powerful exploration of love, faith, and the search for meaning.

Sunninghill Library
2.30pm - 3.30pm, Saturday 31 October
Jo Walton explores some of the ways in which art has portrayed gardens through history, from ancient frescoes to modern installation art, and from precise images of seventeenth-century parterres to rich sweeps of colour, conjuring delicious herbaceous borders. With paintings, sculptures, textiles and more, this will be a rich, mixed bouquet of garden images.
Jo will feature the work of William Nicholson, Ivan Hitchens, Barbara Hepworth, Paul Sandby, Isaac Oliver, Humphrey Repton, Derek Jarman, Cornelia Parker and a host of other glorious garden images.
Those who attended Jo’s talk last year about Victorian moral painting will remember an illuminating and entertaining presentation. This talk will appeal to those interested in art history and to garden enthusiasts.
